PRIZE-GIVING.

ST. ALBANS. The annual prize-giving oi the St. Albans school was held on Thursday evening, in the St. Matthew's Schoolroom, in conjunction with the farewell ceremony to Mr Sutherland, headmaster of the school. The distribution of the prizes and presentations to Mr Sutherland were preceded by a Bhort concert, the items being provided by the school children and others. AMBERLEY HOUSE. The annual prize-giving of the Amberley House Girls' College was held at the College on Satardar afternoon. Amberley House girls usuallv provide excellent entertainment for their visitors, and Saturday's programme was a varied and delightful one. The best item on the programme was a speech made ty the head girl, in which she spoke of the year's work and doings from the pupils' point of view. Among the items were several part songs, a French monologue, and an Irish phantasy, in which green clad elves danced round a bewitched colleen and her shepherd bov. A dramatic episode from Bernard Sha'w's play. "St. Joan," was very well acted by some of the elder £irls, Nancy Oram's rendering of the part of St. Joan, in the Trial Scene was particularly effective. A Christmas carol brought the programme to an end, and Miss King-Church then read her report of the year's work. The prizes were given away by Archdeacon Haggitt, who gave a practical and stirring address. An excellent display of drawing, painting, and needlework was on view, and after tea on the lawn visitors were given an opportunity of inspecting the display. Many also went over the school, and the new buildings were much admired. In spite of the dry weather the Amberley House grounds were at their best, with the many roses in full bloom, and the girl's gardens making pleasant patches of colour as one approached the school. ST. MARK'S

The St. Mark's (Opawa) Open-air School held its first prize-giving on Saturday ovening. The Rev. H. Williams, vicar of St. Mark's, presided. A little play, "A Midsummer's Eve," was acted by tho children. Every child in the school took part, and the loud and sustained applause with which it was received showed that the careful! training that the children had received from Sister Eleanor had produced exceptionally good results. The annual picnic and breaklng-up ceremony of the Fairlie School was held on Thursday. After several' fine days, Thursday was rather overcast, but the rain held off during the day. There was a good attendance o£ parents and otherß interested in the school, most of the public bodies of the district being represented. The afternoon was taken up with the races of the school children. Mr Talbot, chairman of the School Committee, congratulated the staff and pupils on the gaining of 20 out of 21 proficiency certificates, and those of the High School, who gained senior free places John de Lambert and Joan Cook were presented with the dux certificates, and the thirteen who had learned to swim during the season were presented with Mr R. L. Banks's prize of 5s each. Kathleen Bell and John de Lambert were announced as the winners of the F. R. Gillingham Essays. The Rov. R. de Lambert, who presented th« Armistice Day Essay prizes to Elizabeth Ormandy, Ethel Giddings, John de'*Lambert, and Joyce Boulter, also read the. honours lists for the term. The Rev. C. G Willcox presented attendance certificates to the 42 pupils who had qualified for them by missing not more than five half-days for the year." Before the pupils dispersed. Miss K. Bell, on behalf of the pupils o"f Standards V. and VI, presented Miss M. Cooper with a xylonite brush, and the pupils of Standards 111. and IV. presented Miss M. E. Caskey with a volunie of Longfellow's poems. Misses Cooper and Caskey are leaving the Fairlie School, where they have been pupil teachers for the past two years, to enter the Training College at Christchurch. On the invitation of Mr Talbot, the visitors viewed the handwork and drawing displayed in the various classrooms. GRETA VALLEY. The annual prizes were given out at a picnio held at Motunau on Thursday last. During the afternoon a programme of eportfi was held. The prize-list was : Standard Tomlinsoo.
