BIG CRICKET.

NEW ZEALAND V. VICTORIA. HOME TEAM OPENS WELL. (BT CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPTBJQHT.) (aUSTKAUAX AND Jf.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received December 20th, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 20. The weather was fine and cool, and the wicket good, for the resumption of the match, Victoria v. New Zealand. Hope and Cunningham opened the bowling. Mayne, when three, gave a. chance to Lowry behind the wickets off Cunningham, who, after bowling two overs, strained himself when fielding, and had to have a godd spell from bowling. The batsmen were cautious, and the scoring rate was slow. The bowling was fairly accurate, and good fielding saved many runs. Mayne reached the half-century in 88 minutes. The partnership was dissolved at 91, Cosgrovc, who had played an unenterprising game, being caught easily at mid-on. He had hit one boundary. Mayne was caught behind the wickets in the last over before lunch. He had played nice strokes at times, and hit two boundaries. He was slow between the wickets. The century appeared for 111 minutes' play. Hendry and Atkinson added 50 in 28 minutes of bright batting, Hendry being in great form and scoring all round the field. Cunningham was bowling -well, making pace off the wicket. At last Atkinson was beaten all the way by a good ball from Blunt. Dacre, Alloo, and Oliver were frequently applauded for grand fielding. Mitchell was badly beaten by one ball and bowled by the next from Cunningham. The second century was hoisted in 178 minutes. In the first over after tea, Ransford was nicely caught in the slips. Ho had been in. the crease half-an-hour, and had hit one boundary.

Hendry's century came up for 127 minutes' batting, an excellent display. Cunningham maintained good form with the ball, and Daerc was repeatedly cheered for his great cover-point fielding. Hendry, who was opening his shoulders for splendid drives, made his first mistake when 120, miss-hitting one from Cunningham over the slip barrier. The New Zealanders 5 total was passed after 250 minutes' batting, compared with 297 minutes taken by the visitors. Hendry notched 150 in 161 minutes, tho last 50 taking 34 minutes. The batsman was getting run 3 everywhere, and Patrick had a problem to place the field to stop the strokes. Lansdowne was very slow, though the bowling was now losing it 3 sting, but the field was still good. Patrick, in stopping a hard drive by Hendry, split his finger and retired, Gillespie fielding as substitute. Hendry added 100 while his partner made twenty-six. When he was 192, Hendry was nearly yorked by Allcott, but otherwise he rarely flattered the bowling. He reached his second century in 202 minutes, and 400 went up for 306 minutes' play. Hendry gave a great display, and hit 17 fours. He batted 208 minutes, and Lansdowne 89 minutes, the partnership yielding 162 runs.. The attendance was five thousand, and the receipts £lB7.
