Mr H. D. Raphael, of Wellington, arrived yesterday morning to attend Christ's College celebrations. Mr and Mrs B. T. Hay, consulting engineer to the Waimakariri Eiver Trust, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning for the purpose of completing the scheme for the protection of the Waimakarin River. Mr Melbourne Orchard, formerly of Christchurch, but now resident in London, arrived in Wellington by the Matatua on Wednesday. Mr Orchard is well known in Bowling circles, both in the Dominion and in Great Britain, and it was he who was instrumental in arranging the visit of the British bowling team which will arrive at Auckland by the Aorangi from Sydney next Monday. It is not often that five primary school teachers retire at once from the service of an Education Board with from 32 to 42 years' service, and it waft not surprising that special notice was taken of the fact that this had occurred at the last meeting of the Wellington Education Board. Hie chairman said he did not like to ajlow the occasion to pass without making special reference io the long and faithful service of the teachers in question, and asking the Board to forward to each of them a letter of appreciation of the great service rendered by them to education. This was agreed to. The following are the teachers referred to:—Mr R. J. Pope, Eaiwarra School, 37 years', service; Miss M. H. Piggford, Mount Cook Girls', 41 years; Miss A. B. E. Laidler, Grovetown, 33 years; Mrs A. A. Dalrymple, Kaiwarra, -42 years; Miss K. Dempsey, Island Bay. 32 wears.
