AN INCH OUT.
HEADINGS MEET AT COLERIDGE. Advice was received yesterday from Mr F. Lartfcbein, district engineer for the Public Works Department, that tho headings between tho centre shaft and the intake end of the tunnel at Lake Coleridgo met on Wednesday at 1.3U t>.m. The difference in alignment was barely an inch, This is a performance which reflects credit on those responsible, as the Beban party was obliged to establish the alignment by producing a base-line eight feet in length between two plumb lines in shafts that distance When the Hon. J. G. Coates (visited Xiake Coleridge ho was told that the headings would meet within a fortniirht. and the members of the party haxe kept their promise. Both sections were working from a small base of six feet. The centre shaft is down 250 feet, and water which poured down caused a draught which presented a creat difficulty fcr the engineers, who were unable to keep their lines steady, and on one occasion were forced to suffer a delay of over an hour in their work. About four chains of concrete lining remain to be finished. At present the headings l>etween the centre shaft and outlet end are about eieht chains apart, and this section should take six or seven weeks to Dierce. But for the disaster the two sets of headings might have met almost simultaneously. The contract time expired in October, in* it is unlikely that the Department will enforce the penalties.
