ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Miss H. X. Porter, who has been on the staff of the Ashburton High School for the' past twelve months and -who is leaving to be married, was yesterday afternoon presented with an oak tray, a silver entree dish, and a pair of silver vases from the other members of the staff. In making the presentation, the headmaster (Mr W. F. Watters) referred to the loss the school had sustained by the resignation of so competent, a teacher, and wished Miss Porter every happiness in the future. Miss Porter also received a bouquet from the prefect,-. Miss N. Kalangber, M.A., of Wellington, has been appointed to the position of assistant mistress on the staff of the Ashburton High School, rendered vacant, by the resignation of Miss H. N. Porter. General News. At the fortnightly meeting of Daphne (Rebekab) Lodge, No. 34, (1.0.0.F, over which N.G. Sister A. Snttie presided, seasonal greetings were received from the Grand Master and from kindred lodges. The following officers we're elected for the ensuing term: N.G., Sister M. Mayson; V.G., Sister H. Falconer (10 points) 2, B. Millichamp (!) points) 3. Magistrate's Court. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.. presided over the sitting of the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Brvant Charles Donnelly (Mr W. H. Woods) was charged with stealing 601b of wool, valued at £3 17s Gd. the property of some linknown y.Tsons. Accused was convicted and placed on probation for twelve months. On a charge of stealing .1 watch, valued at £2 10s. the property of D. O'Connor, on December sth, John Henry Grice, alias Harry Griee (Mr A. 1C North), pleaded not guilty. Defendant was admitted to probation for twelve months, on the condition that ho took out a prohibition order against himself. "I never had any complaints before, your Worship,'' stated John Bell, of Winslow, who pleaded guilty to charges of failing to send three of his children to school regularly. On two charges defendant was convicted and discharged, while on a third he was fined 4s and costs. "If the schoolmaster laid a complaint against you, as he could, for writing a letter to him like that, I would give you a month's imprisonment," slated the Magistrate f 0 Mrs M. Forde, of Winslow, who wn.s charged with failing to send her child to school regularly. Accused had written a threatening letter to the schoolmaster, and- it was produced in Court. She was lined 4s and costs. Gordon Thomas Wilkie- was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment for failing to comply with a maintenance order, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid arrears amounting to £5. To a charge of allowing carcases to remain so as to become offensive and dangerous 1o public health, Anthony Rogatski, of Springburn (Mr A. Jv. North), pleaded not guilty. The County Council Health Inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson) stated that on October 23rd lie had a ring from a resident of Springburn to say that a number of dead cattle had been left in the riverbed. Accused admitted that they were his. The carcases had b»n skinned. Defendant promised to burn them, but witness went back some time later and they were still giving off an offensive smell. Mr North stated that Rogatski had an unfortunate time during the winter, and 28 of his cows had died with a form of paralysis. The cattle were skinned, and after the pigs had eaten all the flesh the remains were deposited iu the riverbed. The main road was 28 chains from where the cattle were left, while the nearest house was over a mile away. Accused was convicted and fined £2 and costs. For exceeding the speed limit on the Ashburton traffic bridge, the> following persons were convicted and fined:—J. A. Patterson (Eiffelton), J. McQuillan (Eiffelton), F. R. G. Brophy (Pleasant Valley), costs lis; A. Davis (Invercargill), costs 7s; M. O'Keefe (Tinwald), costs 10s; J. J. O'Donnell (Ashburton), costs 7s. Judgment for plaintiff for the amount claimed was entered in each of the following cases:—Vessey Bros. v. J. Smith, for £3 3s; Hallenstcin Eros. v. A. Hamlin, for costs .only, 6s. Mail Notices. MOUNT SOMERS. Rain again set in on Thursday, beginning with' a drizzle, and falling heavily till morning. Owing to a fault having developed on some of the local circuits connected with the Railway Bureau, a gang of telephone workmen set to work and took down mo&t of the wires and rearranged them. A new switch has been placed in the bureau, enabling the operators to connect either with Springburn Exchange oj- with MayJield Exchange, and also to put both-men-tioned exchanges in direct connexion. This step was urged at the opening of the Springburn iixchange a year ago, but! the authorities considered that business would not warrant the exDense. HINDS. There was a good attendance of parents at the annual presentation of prizes. Mr J. M. Hampton, chairman of the school committee, referred to the successful year's work in spite of the loss of time through the epidemic and wet weather. Special prizes awarded, were : —Gardens : W. Chapman and F. Murphy, 1; H. Watson, K. Doiiar, 'L. Anderson 2; cooking: A. Donaldson and N. Rickard. Twelve good-attend-ance certificates were issued. "Wednesday afternoon, the day of the nurse's monthly visit, was a busy day with the Hinds Plunket Society, when Nurse Nelson was greeted by' a large gathering of mothers and children. The monthly meeting of the committee also took place, when the following were present: Mesdames Cottam, in the chair, Maidens, Paterson, McDowell, Watson, Tarbotton, Chisnall {2), McCully (secretary). The last-named gave an interesting account of the recent conference in Dunedin. Feeling reference was made by the president to the sad loss sustained by the unexpected death of one of its members, Mrs Smith, and little Peggie McDowell, one of the first Plunket babies. Motions of sympathy with the bereaved were carried. • RAKAIA. On Thursday afternoon the brcakingup ceremony of the Eakaia School was held. There was a good attendance, of parents and friends, who were invited to inspect the recent alterations and improvements at the school. In the infant room a short programme of action songs and recitations was carried out, and a number ot small boys and girls danced round the maypole. From a Christmas Uteo in the grounds prizes and gifts were distributed: to the younger children by Father Christmas. For the upper classes sports and games were held, and competition for the prize* was keen. After tea had been handed ; round by the ladies the Kovs. A. S. | Morrison (chairman of the School Com- ! mittee) and F. N. Biakiston addressed the children, and congratulated them on the excellence of their work. ' On Thursday evening welcome rain felt at Rakaia after several days of drying north-west wind. The crops in fields and gardens, and the green feed were beginning to show tho effects of the dry weather, and rain was badly needed. The gaugo registered 3G points.
