Accident to Watersider. While engaged loading wool yesterday J morning in one of the holds of the Port Bowen, B. Southwell, a married watersider, who resides in Christchurch, had one of his leps broken. He was pulling out a sling when a dump of wool fell on his leg. He was conveyed to the Christchurch Hospital. Cattle- Bogged., While the steamer John was unloading bullocks at the Cattle Jetty on Thursday evening two of the beasts got away, and, making for the reclaimed ground, soon became bogged in the mud. Efforts to release them only made the animals sink deeper until finally they were shoulder deep. They remained in this position all day yesterday, being fed with hay during the dnv. . Last evening a partv of watersiders, Messrs R. Wright, W. C. Fowlds. W. Barnes, R, Coffey, K. Cornish, and two firemen off the steamer Karetu volunteered to rescue the bullocks. and with the aid of ropes and planks, their effort's were successful after about an hour and a half's hard work. After they had been lifted from the mud the animals could not stand without further danger of sinking. Their legs were therefore tied, so that they could not stand, and the rescuers', dragged them across the soft mud to safety. Seamen's Institute. The weekly concert given at the Seamen's Institute on Thursday was arranged by the ladies of the Sumner Guild. A first-class programme was submitted. Tho following ladies took part: —Songs, Mesdames Boulton, Mogroyd, Cook, Wathew, and Miss W. Barrett; Maori song, Mrs Cook; vocal duet, Mesdames Cook and Wathew; vocal trio, Mesdames Hough, Wathew, and Miss W. Barrett; pianoforte solo, Miss W. Barrett; pianoforte duet, Mesdames Cook and Gough; whistling solo, Miss Gwen Mogridge; dance, Misses Klise Crosby and Stevens; songs, Messrs Tait, and Good, of the s.s. Port Hunter; opening and closing glees by the Glco Party. Mrs Cook acted as accompanist. "The Messiah." Residents of Lyttelton will he privileged to attend a performance of "Tho Messiah" on Wednesday next in the Methodist Church, and the undertaking of the promoters is worthy of warm support. The church choir is receiving the assistance of a number of Lyttelton and Heathcote friends for the occasion, and the chorus work promises to be brilliant. The bolob have been entrusted to promising Lyttelton singers, who have been encouraged to come forward. Miss Clarice Bell is the organist, and the conductor is the church organist, Mr N. R. Williams, who has had considerable experience in this ■ class of work. The performance will commence at 7.45 p.m., thus allowing railway passengers to return in the 9.45 p.m. train. Convent Schools. The Convent schools at Lyttelton broke up yesterday for the Christmas vacation. The previous afternoon the .iunior pupils at the High School were entertained at, a Christmas tree party by the senior pupils. Yesterday morning, prior to the distribution of prizes, a concert was given by the children, many enjoyable and amusing items being presented.
