TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances-for tho Hurunui Turf Ciub'a Annual Meeting are due to-day. Acceptances for tho Wairarapa R.C. Summer and the "VVostland R.C. Midsummer Meetings are duo on Monday. On Tuesday acceptances are duo for the Wyn-lhara R.C. and Stratford R.C. Annual Meetings and for tho Summer Meetings of Marton J.C. and Hawke's • Bay J.C. Mr H. R. Sellors, socrotary of tho New Zealand Racing Conference, who has been laid up wijbh an attack of pleurisy, is now making a good recovery. The first race at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's , Summer Meeting at Motukarara to-day will be run at 1 p.m. Special trains leave Christchurch for the course at 11 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. The runners will be numerous, and a really good day's racing should be tho outcome. Cornstalk's form in running second to Victory Bond afc the Methven Meeting was quite as good as that of Equerry when winning the Springfield Trial Stakes on the same day, and there will be some spirited, speculation on the chance or either winning the Okain's Trial Stakes at Motukarara to-day The English filly Calcite will most likely start in the Okain's Trial Stakes instead of the Hack ■ Handicap. She lias been suffering from shin • soreness for some time, and her chance of winning will depend upon the way she hits out in tho early stages. Silver Cord and Cultivation filled the places behind Equerry in the Springfield Trial Stakes at the Methven Meeting, and they will be again meeting him at Motukarara to-day. Their prospects look no brighter than they did at the last time out, but both can be depended on to race solidly. t Corinthio and Sarty should be Enare's strongest opposition in the , Halswell Hack Handicap to-day. Frivol- >- • ous, 1 in the same race, is a good beginner, but six furlongs seems a little too for for,her as yet. His Majesty has finished on so well , m all his recent races that there will be backing for him .to beat Tarleton ted' Sunny Loch in the Akaroa Handicap. -The two top-weights are certain to carry most money, and as Tarleton has. previously won over the distance on the same course he may be the ■ elect of speculators. Sunny Loch has raced and worked well recently, and ho wilt give his supporters a good run for their money, as will the Autumnus filly Restrospect. . Ferino may go the full distance, but even if she doesn't the contest between the other four should be one of the best of the day, even if the field is the smallest. The Cheat let his backers down badly at the Methven Meeting, when he was unplaced in the Viewmont "Welter, won by Grey Lass, with Malaga, second and Corinthic third. In the Jje Bon's Welter to-day he will be meeting Grey Lass on 111b better terms, Malaga on 41b, and Corinthic on lib, and at the weights should give a better account of himself. . Sartist will be a new opponent, and should he be at his best will make matters interesting for the four mentioned. The Kaituna Hack Handicap bears an open appearance, but in so poor a lot Gay Queen might not be asked too much to curry lOst 21b. Rigel might supply most interest apart from the top-weight.

The good field for the Brackenfield Flying Handicap should provide an exciting termination to a good day's sport. There is nothing engaged that can be written out, but most likely Finora, Clareina, and Serotina will carry the heaviest support. Windshield has been placed in commission again at Eiocarton and the Tractor filly looks l particularly well after her brief spell. Seanight (Day Comet—Week End) arrived at F. D. Jones's stable from North Canterbury on Thursday. The ' half-sister to Economist has grown into a nice three-year-old, but it will take some time she can be produced in racing trim. . Armchair and the Greyspear—Colleen Mary gelding in R. Longley's stable at Riccarton are beginning to do some solid work and it should not be long before both .of them are seen under colours. L. Manson has been engaged to ride Broadwood in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. The Sarto —Love Token mare Sarty has been sold to go to the North islands but will remain in her present Quarters until after the Dunedin and Waikouaiti Meetings are concluded. Though there has been a good weeding out of horses handicapped for first day's events at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Meeting, there still remain fields large enough to provide the best class of racing, included amongst the number being a good contingent from liiccarton stables. The big race, the Otago Handicap, should bring out a fair-sized field of good handicap horses and after a prolonged spell, Roseday will make his reappearance in the Federal Handicap, a race that should assist him materially in his preparation for some of the long distance* events to be decided within the next few months: Hurdlers, hacks, and two-year-olds are ■well engaged and good Wring is assured on Saturday next.

AUCKLAND CARNIVAL. MANY HORSES TRAVEL. (special to "the razsa.") WELLINGTON, December 18. Prom Thorndon this afternoon there left by 6pecial train for Auckland 41 horses, thoroughbreds ani trotters, to race- at the Summer Meetings of the Auckland Racing Club and Auckland Trotting Club. The train will be added to at Palmerston North and at Alarton, and when it steams out of the latter station it will have on board 72 horses, to the value of many thousands of pounds. Tile train lias been especially well aiTanged, and is much appreciated by trainers and owners. More than half of the horses on board are from the South Island, the light harness breed being in the majority from that part. Quite a number of equine celebrities will be on board in Haze, the Auckland Cup favourite, Jtoyal Divorce.' Star .Stranger, and Mandane (engaged in the Great Northern Derby). Hapino (top-weight in the Auckland Cup), the New Zealand Cup winner The Banker, and Commendation's rival Lysander. The train, which is due to arrive at Auckland at 7.49 a.m. to-morrow, has passenger cars attached for the comfort of trainers and attendants.

The racing trainers' teams leaving "Wellington arc as follows:—]?. J. Mason (2), It. Vi. King (1), H. Cutts (1), T. F. Quinlivan (3), and T. 11. Gillett (3). . Under tho trotting cole the following trainers are represented:—T. G. Fox (1), O. E. Hooper (2), H. Frost (2K 1). Withers (4). it. E. Mills (2), W. Lowe (2), D. "Warren (2), F. Holmes (2), J. Sheehan (3).. E. J. Smith (1), S. J. Thomas (2), C Davey (I). At Palmerston North J. IT. Jefferd with six horses, G. New with one, and a horse apiece from the stables of S. WaddeTl, H. Neagle, and Miss G. Maher will join the train, and in addition there nre several light harness horses. At Marton there will be the teams of W. ttavner (4), F. Tilley (6), and 0. Cox (4).

AUCKLAND ACCEPTANCES.

RAILWAY HANDICAP DIVIDED. (STItCMI. TO "THE WUESS.") AUCKLAND, December 18. The acceptances received for events to bo decided on the first day of ttw •Auckland Racing Club's 'Summer Meeting make very interesting rending, especially those received for tho Auckland Cup. Up till tho final payment this ovening 51 horses remained m tho big two-mile race, and of this number no fewer than 30 had their engagements discontinued. All the fancied candidates still stand their ground and a l creat race may be exacted between the fifteen engaged. Only two Canterbury trained horses, Count Cavour and Haze, reinam in, and both should bo well supported on the day. ' The field for tho Railway Handicap oromises to be particularly large, for although '6O were allowed to drop out, a field of 30 still remains, and in view of the number of probable starters being in excess of the number permitted by the stipendiary stewards to be started from the six furlongs' post at Ellerslie in one race, it will be necessary to ran this important sprint event in two divisions. Horses will be allotted to the respective divisions as under: — FIRST DIVISION. Reremoana, Glentruin, Royal Blood, Tukia, Money Order, Broad«ood, Siaosi, Mimetic, Automne, Dan Quin, Merry Damon. Sun Up. Archeen, Cawnnore. Ballymoy 11., Air Queen. SECOND DIVISION. King Merv, Hipo, Finc-lli, York Ahbev. Civility, Pelham, Gold Acre, Lady Cavendish, Master O'Rorke, King Lu, Oration, Nincompoop, Exactly, Master Doon, Appellant. The fields for the olassic races promise to be exceptionally large for this class of race, and to see the Great Northern Derby contested by a field of 1&. would invest the race with particular interest. The Thirty-First RovaJ Stakes has a large field of two and . three-year-olds engaged, and though the final payments for the Great Northern Foal Stakes leaves but a small field, quality is exceptionally well renresented in Commendation and Lysander, the two recognised crack two-year-olds of the season.

TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Ashburton T.C.'s Summer Meeting close to-day at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the South Wairarapa T.C.'s Annual Meeting close on Tuesday. Excellent nominations have been received by, the Canterbury Park T.C. for its Summer Meeting. Amongst the horses engaged are Ahuriri, iteaim, Great Hope, Away, Logan Chief, Sheik, Orion, Waitaki Girl, Pedro Pronto, "Willie Logan, Bonny Logan, Bessie Logan, Ivy Audubon, Native Chief, King Dillon, Delavan's Quest, First Fashion, Bingenette, Bonny Spec, Audominion, Charles Dixie, Master Audo, and John Mauritius. Satisfactory nominations hare been received for the Wellington T.C.'s Summer Meeting. Twenty-one horses figure in tho chief race, the New Zealand Gold Cup, including Great Hope, Nikora, Countryman, Logan Lou, Bessie Logan, Black Admiral, Pedro Pronto. Native Chief, and Talaro, while in the minor events are Hue Coronado, Fight Ever Bruce, Lord Neoean, Rose Pointer' Marvin Mac, Nnpland, Blue Star. Holly Boy, Frisco Beau, Real the Great, Some Jazz, and Littlo Johnnie. Tho special horso train which left Thorndon for Auckland took forty-one gallopers and trotters. This number is expected to increase to 6eventy-ono at Marton. Mr H. F. Nicoll will be present at the Ashburton T.C.'s Summer Meeting-, and then ho will leave for the north to witness his fillies Nantwich and Ayr race in the Great Northern Derby. The principal races at the Forbury Park T.C.'s Summer Meeting nest month are the Dunedin Cup of 1020 sovs, and the Forbury Handicap of 750 sovs. Both events are ran over two miles, and are for horses than can do 4.32 or better J. J. Kennerley has taken possession of the stables at Addington recently ocoupied by G. S. Smith, and in future will train nis team at headquarters. Billy Sea and Rose Audo axe unlikely starters at the Auckland T.C.'s Summer Meeting. In the list of handicaps published for the Winslow Handicap at the Ashburton Troting Club's Summer Meeting, Kelman scr should read Kenmuir scr. Kelman's handicap is 168 yds behind. Word comes from Wanganui that Ngata is being freely discussed in regard to events at the Summer Meeting at Ellerslie, and it is reported' that he has done a good deal of reverse work, There is no doubt that, if produced in as good heart as when he won the Wanganui Cup in 1922, he would have a great chance in the Auckland Cup, but until he is withdrawn from his engagements nearer home it mav he wise to leave him out of mind for Ellerslie. If he starts in the Manawatu Cup he is to be ridden by B. H, Morris,

A "WAHINE" INCIDENT. On a trip from Lyttelton recently an \merican tourist disturbed his cabin mates for hours by incessant coughing. In desperation one of the latter insisted upon the raucous barker gargling "FlucnzoV which the wise traveller carried, and sleep was then possible. 8
