Ciive's school desk is preserved in its original home at the Grammar School, Market Drayton,- in Shropshire, and it bears his initials carved by himself. Two other like treasures come to mind. In Hawkshead Grammar School, in Lancashire, there is Wordsworth's desk, on which he, too, carved his name. At Stratford-on-Avon is a heavy old Tudor desk that came out of the King Edward VI. School, attended by Shakespeare. If not his desk, he must have seen and handled it — even if it were (as some think) a master's desk, over which cany a spanking took j?lac*-
