ROYAL SHOW.
NORTH ISLAND CRITICISMS. When communicated with yesterday relative. to : the North Island criticisms of the conduct of the recent Eoyal Show, as set out in yesterday's issue of "The Press," Mr James Deans, president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, stated that matters connected with the Show would-be discussed by the General Committee of the Association at. its- meeting on December 9th. In view of this, Mr Beans said that he preferred not to discuss the c'ominents made "by Mr D. Buchanan. Secretary's Statement. Mr G. G. Denniston, the secretary of the Association, when, asked for his views on Mr Buchanan's statements, said:— "Judging by the fact that Mr Buchanan, ine-my hearing, made disparaging remarks about the cattle pavilion before, he had ever seen it, it would appear as though he. came down from the North Island with the intention of looking for trouble." Feed for Cattle. With- regard to the cattle pavilion, Mr Denniston said that it was certainly not completed yet, and a few. weeks before the Show the committee had been doubtful whether they would be able to get it sufficiently forward *to enable it to be used. The long spell of bad weather experienced recently had delayed the work of erection, and it was pushed forward as rapidly as possible in order to be available for the Show. The Association's charges for feed were exactly what the Association itself had to pay for the feed. No profit had been made out of the sale of feed. All straw for bedding down up to the time of the Show was provided free by the Association, and in addition the Association supplied free what it considered was sufficient straw'to keep the place clean during the Show. But some exhibitors who asked for extra bales were charged cost price for them.
Mr Denniston said he understood that no charge was made for mangolds. The Association had never previously been asked to supply mangolds, but at the request of some* of the North Island exhibitors it had obtained six tons at a cost of £6, the cartage on whieh had cost £l3. . "Mr Buchanan complained about the transport facilities at this end, and from his criticism it appears that the transport facilities in the North Island must have heeniperfect," said Mr Denniston. "He has not said a word about what happened at the other end. I can say that it cost the Association £8 8s for the special train on the Sunday, and my impression is that it did not take as leng to reach Addington as Mr Buchanan states."
