DUNTROON.
T » The connexion between tlie New'JJcaj land and Australian Duntroons is perihaps not commonly known. An interesting communication on the point, from 'Mr S. ii. v Raymond, K.C., appears in a. recent issue of the "Federal Capital Pioneer." Mr Raymond writes:— __ "Tfie existence of & Duntroon in New Zealand is, probably, not known to many of those interested in the development of Canberra, and its environs. The Dominion Duntroon is a picturesque, willow-embowered village in North Otago, situate on the south bank of the Waitaki, the river vhieh hr.s its source among the great glaciers of the. Mount Cook region and which affords an outlet to several great lakes, notably Pukaki and Tekopo. into this region, some seventy or eighty years «g<> came the Sydney merchants, Messrs Robert Campbell and >Sons, Cadets of the 'Scottish house of Duntroon' and founders of the N.S.W. Duntrooh and of the historical church near Canberra. "The Campbell firm acquired and held for many years great estates , in the "Waitaki district, and with the same hereditary and religious instincts which had marked them in Australia, railed the town they founded 'Duntroon,' and huilt on the banks of the river, in beautiful white Oaniaru stone, a handsome church and vicarage. "The Waitaki is the Iwundary between the Scottish Province of Otago and English Province of Canterbury of Anglican origin, and the Duntroon Episcopal Church is on the Presbyterian side of the river, but visible and available to Canterbury churchgoers for many miles." Mr Raymond mentions the fine fishing to be had round about Duntroon, and suggests that Australians ought to try it.
