• ■ —-^ —— DROWNED IN OPEN SUMP. - The inquest concerning the death of Patricia Audrey McDowell, aged 2 ' years and 7 the daughter of . Mr and Mrs H. McDowell, of Hinds, j who was accidentally drowned in a sump at the residence 6f her gxandi parents on Saturday morning was heid ' before the District .Coroner, Mr J. Cow, yesterday. i Wi\T. B'. McDowell gave evidence that he resoued the girl from the sump and sent for the doctor. Ida, Maud McDowell, mother of the child, said that she was on a visit to her mother-in-law's s place; She missed the child, who had been pi ay- ; ihg about the house., After searching j the room, she went outside and saw ; the sticks with which the girl had been i playing floating on the water in the , sump. She screamed and her brother j rushed out and lifted the child out. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The Coroner added that although he deeply sympathised with the parents he was brought to the conclusion that the young life had been sacrificed by neglisrence cm the part of someone in. leaving an open sump about four feet deep where young , children were allowed to play, to say j nothing of its condition from a sani- | tary point of view. i ■_
