HEATHCOTE NEWS.

ROSE SHOW. The fifth annual Rose Show under the auspices of the Methodist Church was held in tho Heathcoto Club Hall on Saturday, and was well patronised, especially in the evening. There was a good display of roses and other flowers excepting sweet peas, entrie* in this class being few. Mr T. Arkley. who exhibited well in other sections, made only one entry in the sweet pea class, his plants having been almost entirely deI stroypd hy grubs. Cooking and vegetable entries also did not quito come up to previous years. The show was officially opened hy the Kev. G. R. Petersen, and in tho evening thp Rev. W. 11. Speer was in attendance. Financial returns from the stalls showed that good business had been done, and it is estimated that between £SO and -60 will be cleared. Mr Arkley also won the special prize presented by Messrs MacFarlane and Company for .most points in the whole show. ' Bowls. The Heathcote Club defeated the Papanui team on the local greens on Saturday afternoon. A friendly match also occupied one rink. The wind was very unfavourable to play. • Tennis. The Heathcote A team were easily beaten by a North Beach team on Saturday at North Beach. A friendly garffe; Pi Grade, was played on the local courts with a Trinity team from Lyttelton.
