NATIONAL ROADS.

U.S. HIGHWAY SCHEME. (BT CAULK -TRtS3 ASSOCUTrOJC--COrTIIIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AKD X.Z, CABLE ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, November 20. The Secretary of Agriculture, Mr "\V. M. Jardine, lias inaugurated a national system of highways, comprising "5.584 miles of the country's best road?. This is the first national highway system which the United States has adopted, and establishes 115 routes, touching every State in the Union. The total mileage is only a fraction of 2,866,000 miles of roads of all kinds in the United States, but the selection of the best routes lays down the foundation for welding others into a system later. Co-ordination of routes has been made in response to a nationwide demand by motorists, whose increasing numbers found difficulty iu. touring the country over roads marked chaotically. The achievement constitutes the most ambitious attempt at a national system since Napoleon laid out the still-exist-ing network of Routes National in Prance.
