TURF GOSSIP. Frirftl, winner of tho Avarua Handicap at Winton on Thursday, is a fivo-ycar-old brother to Economist. Ho was bred by Mr G. B. Starky, but was sold to his southern onnors before liia racing career coinnjenccd. Very good nominations were received on Thursday for tho Mcthvcn Racing Club's Annual Mooting, which this year wilf bo held at Iticcurton. AVitli an average of nearly 20 per race, the club should be aWb to provide b'g~fldd s > and of sufficiently good class to attract a big attcndnnco to the' meet'ng on December sth. Tho Lcvtn Racing Club's Annual Meeting is the only fixture in t-iic Dominion to-day. Strategy has raced well over hurdles • recently, and his second at tho Kgmont- . "Wanganui Hunt Meeting, and his win at Wavcrley on Labour Day will givo him. additional supporters if Btarted in the Manakau Hack Hurdles at lievin. Bo nee to, on Riccartou form, might beat him. ; • ' Diogenes may not be nuito forward enough to do himself justioo in the "Welter Hack Handicap at Levin, but his class should span the difference in tho weights between him and Our Juck. Ardfinhan is also in tho race, and tho bad luck that seems to have stuck to him in many of his recent efforts may not bo apparent to-day. AVactea's rehandicap in tho Levin Cup will not prevent her ajiain showing a bold ftont. Apart from her'lmperial Spark - and Ludtis are the most. frequently discussed in connexion with tho race. Lucius may run in the Macdonald Memorial. Welter instead, and thougu giving away weight to all his opponents, including Miss Hupana and Birthmark, lie will rcry nearly go out favourite if started. . ' Tho four-year-old colt Ar&nsio, by Sunstar —Maid of Orange, who waß recently bought by Mr J. Jti. Reid in Eng-1 land, was purchased on behalf of Mr ,J. D. Ormond, of Hawke's Bay. Aransio wits a winner in England this season, having been successful at tho Whitsuntide Meeting at Manchester in tho Salford Borough Handicap Plate, of 1000 sovs, and run over six fiirlongs. In this raoo lie carried topweight'. 1 ' After tho contest for the C. B. Fisher '. Plate at Flomington on tho 7th inst., | in which Windbag met defeat at the hands of Pilliowinkio, it was a popular opinion (remarks a Melbourne writer) ■that it Would have been a wiso policy nob to haTc exacted the effort from tho j Magpie horse in the mile and a-lialf ; raoe. Windbag is stated to have carried himself Well, but the sever© race exited from him in the Melbourne Cup .evidently took some of the steel out of him. ' "Windbag w«n now, boweven pfobably be given a rest unfci! tho autujiitt meetings roll round. : The funeral of the late horseman S. "W*llb, who died in Auckland on Mon- . day, took place in Wellington on Thursiday afternoon. . ' Bondi, by -Boniform —Socrefc Link, . ridden by Ashley Reed, won the first * division of the Novice Handicap at the Williamßtown Meeting (Victoria) on ,;the 6th inst., and at tho Ascot Pony j Rac6s pn the 4th Predominate, by Nassau from Matty, won the first division c $ tho 14.0 Handicap. Matty was a 'Busier to Nanna, and Marsa ( and a lllialf-sistc.r to Artillerio and Prim. t~ The attendance at Flemington on ' 'Helbourne Cup day was officially esti- - hi(. 116,000, while at least anotiier 80,000 Witnessed the - race from Footscray and Newmarket hills, overlook tho course. i. -S: Donoghuo commonced an action -/last month against tho New / York , "Herald" Company and another for {Cojnments on riding of Papyrus ill tlife match against Zev in 1923, says an > s exchange. It was suggested thiat DoniOghufe was a non-trier on Papyrus, an - allegation for which Donoghuo's counsel, stated there was not the' slightest fpufldation. ITio defendants were/satisfied it was inadvisable to fight, and 'it was announced ill the King s Bench ..Division (London), last w/aek that they -juad paid Donoghue substantial , dam'Pfeei and costs. ■ Xa Ireland up to this year a total of > 300 winniAg mounts for the season had ' not bfeen reached by any jockey, but at tho And of September it seemed quite likely that J. Canty would do so this ' ..season.- Up to that time he had mado new figures for Ireland by riding 91 .winners, tho provious best being E. Ideal weather favoured the Nelson Trotting Club for tho opening day of its Annual Meet' ing at Richmond to-day. For an off day the attendance was fair, but speculation was limited, -with the result that the total) sator receipts dropped 704 sovs. Tho track was fast, and as a Tesult tho 'win-, ners and nwt of tho placed horses showed improvement on their handicaps. D. Withers was in goodform, as he was associated with three winners—Glcftdora, Royal Audubon, and Silk Thread—and two seeonds —Royal Audubon and Nyallo, whilo tho local rciosman, L. F. Berkett, scored in tho last two events. Glendora, a five-year-old mare by Harold Dillon from Agesenia, owned by Mr J. R. McKenzio and trained by D. Withers, was installed favourite for tho Trial Handicap, and after being well placed throughout the race Bhe .won easily from the New Brighton-trained mare Florrie Huon, who pqc4d a good race' until a furlong from home, where, she broke, but settled down in time to beat .the fastfinishing Audubon Patch, with Nota Bene close up fourth. Dorrio Thorpe w«p prominent for ten furlongs, but Totara Jack, who was well backed, made 4 poor, showing. Linda Dillon and. Grey Logan did not go away, correctly, and Vikota ;w»s ontolassed. - D. Withers was' also ■ successful in the next race, the# Brightwater Handicap, with the Great Audubon gelding, Royal Audubon, whose task was mado easy by th 6 erratic behaviour of his opponents, l>avid and Peter Boar.. Both showed more speed than' the win- ■ ner, but were not handled to the best advantage, and broke rei>eatedy when extended. Maori Peter and Chaucer-made a poor showing. Asia ' did not look -ready to race, and Some Jazz paced ttfo furlong? before being pulled up, and was not persevered with. Tho Westport owned and trained Smithflold, .by Brent Locanda from Beiette, won tho Wakefield Handicap with something ia hand from Vi»n Rich and Fiungleam.. Smithfield did not begin as well as the majority cf his opponents, but when it eanie to the business end of tho raco ho_ drow away frbm the field,J and the Itual issue wag never in doubt. Despite sevoral mistakes, Van Rich beat Supgteam, who finished very tired, and for a favourite gave.a pier display, and will require to improve to win at tho Meeting. Drono did not haudlo the jtrack to advantage, and Bingen Lad was never in tho liring- ' line. Thp American-bred eolt Silk Thread led from start to finish in tho ;Fiifacy Memorial Handicap, and won nicely in 4m 435, or six seconds faster than his handicap. From (he fall of tho flag until the last fifty yards, tho son of Bingen Silk and Handsome Jane gave a pleasing display of pacing. Then he broke,' but the mistake, did not affect the result of the race. Black Cloud, a dual -winner at South Wairarapa last season, paced & good race into second place, and was, unlucky in meeting the Winner on his best bihaviour. Lottie Advance was with the leaders until the homo turn, when sho -tired and>]ln : .shcd a poor third, with Deiyver Wood fourth. Great Form did not leave, tho mark, while Wineborry, Dome, Why Worry, Locanda Boy, and Rita Ryo were beaten for pace. The Ladies' Bracelet was a poor race, and -waß confined to Lonsdale and Blue Glen, the former winning mest decisively in 3m 38 4-ss, or 13 l-5s better than his handicap. Blue Glen also bettered her time 10 -seconds. She iB a speedy filly, but at present cannot stay. Proud Joyce finished third 200 yards behind Bluo Glen. Tho favourite. Lady Ballin, broke up badly in thd first furlong, and, together with Star of Hopo and Just Bill, finished in the ruck. I'otor Elect'was favourite add backed doWn to odd?-on in tho President's Handicap. Ho bogan smartly and was always with tho leaders. Two furlongs from home tho Belfasttrained gelding drew clear from tho] rest of tho field, and won with ridiculous catse. He looks a possibility to-morrow. Erin's Child looked like being second, but tired in the straight, and tho erratic Mary Brown beat her in the last few strides for second money. Honey wood finished fourth, but ,at no .ptage of tho raco did he look a -winner.' Clive Bell lost most .of his handicap at tho start, but onno into his stride showed a lot' of speed, only to f*do away at the end *of a mile. Lady Ballin fgain-refused to begin,-and Outstep stood at tho post and took no part in the race. Topsy Hall, Countess Eve, and Chaucer declined their engagements in tho Waimea Handicap, leaving ten starters. Mslly Audubon was favourite, with Nourrtiahal and Royal Audubon the boat backed of the others. Audo Child, on scratch, began better than several of tho others, and immediately took the Jead, which he maintained until tho finish, and although ho broke moro than ooce. ho scored comfortably at the finish, and paid a useful dividend, the best of the day., Audo Child is owned by Mr F. Curran, a patron of L.*F. Bcrkett's stable, and for a green trotter registered a good por/orirtanee. For his win in the Brightwater .Handicap Royal Audubon was penalised 36yd>. At the end of tho first mile the Addington-trained gelding somn distance behind tho leaders, but, assisted by their mistakes end a well-sustained >run over the last three furlongs, he finished second. Some Jaiz gave a mixed display of pacing and trotting and finished third, but was subsequently disqualified, and Nourmahal w«s placed third' The last-named trotted well for three-parts of tho journey, but was left without a final offort, a similar remark applying to Fille de Ballin. David and Molly Audubon mixed their gait repeatedly, and both horses trotted • long way (>elow tl|e>r best. Rona Audqbon was seen to advantage in the* Dash Handicap. She tod from start to finish, but had to be fully extended to dispose of Nyalte, Drone, and Why Worry. Tho winner is an aged mar© by Great Audubon front Sadie Dillon. She is owned and trained by L. F. Berkett, and' was bred by 'tho lato Mr R. McMillan. It was hor best raco to date. After beginning slowly, Nyallo finished very fast in second place. She registered 2m 17s for tho mile, which under ordinary circumstances would have won. Drono went a betttr race than earlier in the dav, I as also did Why Worry,. the latter finishing fourth, close up, in a fast-run race. Of the others, Joan Vue made the best showing.
