IMPERIAL MISSION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Committee of the Imperial Mission, there -were present Dr. Levinge (chairman), Professors J. Macmillan Brown (president), and T. G. R. Blunt, Messrs J. D. Hall, G. Gould, A. F. Wright, J. Studholme, and Mrs Spence-Clark. Mrs Spence-Clark was admitted as a member of the committee, and leave of absence was granted to Professor Hugh Stewart, who is in England. It was reported that the Hon. W. P. Reeves had written to the secretary agreeing to deliver a public address in Christchurch under the auspices of the Mission, and a sub-committee was set up to make the necessary arrangements. • "file chairman reported that the sub-com-mittee from the Mission had met representatives of the Victoria League to disenss the question of - immigration as especially affecting boys and girls, and further action had been deferred pending a report from the Dominion Settlement Association recently set up by the Chambers of Commerce Conference in Wellington. In the meantime the Hon. L. M. Isitt was asked, as representing the Imperial Mission, to bring the subject before the executive of the local Boy Scouts' movement, and, if possible, to seenre their co-operation by getting into touch by correspondence, etc., with the similar organisation in England (which he since did very effectively). » It was resolved: "That it is desirable, provided satisfactory arrangements can be made between the British and New Zealand Governments ns regards finance to establish hostels for the training of boys and girls of British birth, not exceeding 17 years of age, in facing and domestic pursuits | in the South Island." A sub-Committee, consisting of the chairman, Mrs Spence-Clark, Mr Stndholme, and .Major Ashworth, was set up to report again at the next meeting. Following the resolution, it was agreed that it would later be desirable for Boy Scouts' and Girl Guides' I Associations to get into touch with similar organisations in Kngland, with a view to a good typo of young person at Home being vpneouraged to _ consider ultimate settlement in the Dominion; that it would be also desirable to consider the possibility of a training farm for boys with a hostel attached, if possible, in the proximity of Lincoln College: and a hostel for girls where domestic training appertaining to the country life and pursuits could be taught. It was considered that a committee shonld be set up- at. Home, consisting of persons possessing a sound knowledge of New Zea- | land affairs, to assist in investigating the health and circumstances of applicants for 1 emigration, so as to avoid undesirable immigrants being sent out here'. It was reported that the new membership -cards had bCRn printed and were being distributed. "It was resolved to send a letter to the Pjjlne Minister,' expressing- the Committee's appreciation of his .Empire policy as foreshadowed in his recent cpeeches in Christchurch and Dunedin. A letter was received from Mr Am err, Secretary of Stat* for the Dominion, advising that he 'was pleased to hear of tha formation of the Mission, and that lie considered the objects of the organisation should make a strong appeal to those interested in the Empire.
