VOLCANO ACTIVE.

NGAURUHOE SMOKING STRONGLY. FEW EARTH TREMORS. (special to "the tress.") AUCKLAND, November 19. Telegraphing last night the "Herald's" Taupo correspondent said that Ngauruhoe was emitting large volumes of vapour early yesterday morning, but later was obscured from view by hazy weather conditions. A motorist who arrived here from Ractihi in the evening stated that when he passed the volcano it was belching out great clouds of vapour. The mountain could be seen clearly this morning, and was smoking stiongly. The upper half of the ooue lias been covered with debris, causing it to stand out black in strange contrast with the still snow-covcrcd peaks of Ruapchu and Tongariro. The present activity is the first of any note since that of June 4th of last year. The throwing out of vapour by Ngauruhoe has been in progress for several days, and has become more pronounced. The heavy smoke cloud, as the wind carried it from the mountain this morning, soon obscured the view of Ruapehu, but left Tongariro well in sight. The violent gales of the past few days died down yesterday. Last night one of the. most brilliant of the stars hud, .a distinct halo round it, due, it is suggested, to the condition of the atmosphere owing to Ngamjjhhoc's activities. Using a powerful, niarino telescope about an hour before sunset this evening, heavy volumes of smoke could still be seen issuing. The whole district seems to be enveloped in a Iroze. The sunset was very beautiful. . . (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAJI.) TAUMARUNUI, November 19. Shortly after 10 o'clock'last night a fairly severe earthquake was experienced, lasting seven seconds. ' Some alarm was caused, but there was- no damage. The volcano Ngauruhoe has been active for three or four days, and yesterday a column of smoke 700 or 800 feet high was .emitted from the crater. The volcano was still active to-day, though not to the same extent as last night. Several shocics were felt in the vicinity of Waimarino.
