. ♦ ——"' MR A. D. WYLIE ENTERTAINED. About 70 journalists of Christchurch assembled yesterday afternoon' in Ballantyne's tearooms to" say good-bye to Mr A. D. Wylie, late associate editor of the "Lyttejton Times," who has accepted a similar position on the staff of the Sydney "Bulletin." Mr M. E. Lyons, president of the Christcliurch Journalists' Association, after reading apologies from Messrs M. Ci Keane, editor of "The Press," A. G. Hendessoiij man-agmg'-editor of . the "Times," A. M. burns, manager of "The Press," S. Saunders, ex-editor of the "Lyttclton ""H'lpies," and others, said that probably no larger gathering of Christchurcli journalists had ever been assembled, which was a tribute to Mr Wylie's popularity. Mr Lvons, Mr A. Dickson, Mr W r . G. Atack, Mr J. S. Kelly, Mr A. B. Lane, and Mr Andrew Burns, all of whom had been associated with Mr Wylie in Christchurch journalism for many vears, spoke of his special and general abilities as a journalist, and of his sterling worth as a man, and they joined in wishing him the success he deI served in Australia. Mr Lyons presented Mr Wylie with a gold fountain pen and pencil, a gift from his 'fellow-mem-bers of,, the. Christchurch Journalists' Association. ... r Mr Wylie, in a brief reply, confessed ti* some" regrets on leaving his native city of Christcliurch. His aim would be so to work and ljve iu Australia that ho might one day, possibly in his declining years, come back to dwell again among tho scenes he hod all his life loved so dearly. He thanked tho speakers all of whom, he said, had been the friends of his youth, for their kindly references to himself, and also he thanked the journalists for their handsome gifts.
