ARBITRATION COURT.

COMPENSATION CASE. Full, compensation for the loss of a hand was given -by tho' Arbitration Court yesterday to. a sawmill .worker, Andrew .lack, who had proceeded against the Kanieri-Hokitikn Sawmilling Co., - Ltd. Mr Justice Frazer presided, and there were associated with hiin Messrs W. Scott and- H. Hunter. D/Lv V.S: Wildirig .appeared .for the plain-, tiff, and' Mr M. J. Gresson for the defendant company. The statement of claim staled that on February 9th, 1924,' plaintiff was lifting rails when his ■little finger and the palm of his hand woro crushed! septic poisoning' setting in. From that' date- until October 15tli, 1925, ,he had been permanently incapacitated, and was still permanently .'incapacitated.' Ho had undergone four operations, and would- possibly have to- Undergo further operations. The statement, of; defence consisted- of a denial'of the accident occurring- .while plaintiff .was at work. It stated that' the compensation which had-been paid had been paid under a misapprehension. The plaintift", Andrew Jack, said that while working as a'-/sawmill, hand on February 9th. .1924, be was lifting tramlines. In the "act of knocking the raiis off the sleepers, .the hammer jarred the little tinker. That even-ing'-the finger commenced to swell. " Ho worked until the following Wednesday, when he had to knock off.. Since then .he had been under treatment in hospitals in Christcburch and the ; West Coast. • His Honour said . that there was very little in dispute. The hand was apparently permanently . useless for industrial purposes. Ever. if toe hand did improve slightly, it was counterbalanced by the injury to the elbow. The Court had decided to-treat the case as orre of total loss of the hand. Compensation, amounting to 70 per cent, of the total, would be awarded, together with costs. Full compensation until August Hist would also be granted. XEW AWARDS. The following industrial awards' were filed yesterday:—Chris tchu'r oh Linotype Operators' Award, Canterbury Local Bodies Labourers' Award, Canterbury Brick.
