When George Stephenson suggested that they should augment their revenue in this way, the suggestion was opposed as likely to bring the railways, into contempt. For many years after the London and Birmingham" railway first began to carry coal, the waggons that* contained it were sheeted over, so that their contents might not be seen; and when the coal wharf was made at Crick station, near Eugby, a screen was built to hide the work from the observation of passengers on the line.
