It was really wonderful • dition thai the balk of to-day's cnt.. „.....! forward in, leaving very littie to be desired, and very much to be admired, and one or '""" ' '"" ent.s from South Canterbury tanding feature. The sale better than ia;t week on an average. An irregularity, of course, wwars r noticeable, in connexion with many of the sales, which was tinted by the question of credit. : smaller tradesmen at the present time are feeling the financial pinch, and the high prices on the hoof, the reduced price for the offal, and- the delay in payments, are being reflected in the restriction of confining competition to certain alleyways in which apparently credit is obtainable. Our best sales were on behalf of a South Canterbury client, whose sheep sold from 40s 6d to 54s 4d, and on behalf of Mr G. F. Wright, who sold haifbred wethers up to 56s 6d. and hogget? up to 30s 10d. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN YOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON and CO, ADDINGTON. FAT CATTLE. Tho entry comprised 466 head, of -which H. Matson and Co.'s share comprised 06. There were consignments from the North Island and the West Coast, and the quality from both these localities left nothing to be desired. Tho weights were good, and the master fattenar left his trade mark upon them. Tho entry comprised more steer beef than formerly. There wore several consignments of Peninsula cattle and local cattle from round the nearby hills, and these were nil showing a littlo bit plain and rough. There was a good attendance of tho public, and country buyers were also present. Competition throughout was keen, but tho market was not so buoyant as the previous week. In our opinion we reached the peak prices last Wednesday, and although, there is a very nraall margin of difference in to-day's market for the prime handy-weight cattle or the big rough Canterbury weights, the small margin that failed to materialise in to-day's market was responsible for several withdrawals. Personally, wo think to-day's sale was a good one. and if current over-all prices are to be maintained, we see no reason for complaint, We 'quote tho goneral average:— Steer Beef— Extra prime .. .. 60s (With a few extra in excess of Oris price.) There aro numerous vendors from long-range centres like the North Island who are feeling this market with a view to sending consignments forward, and if vendors cannot sell them now, and take advantage of the prices while they are going, then "they are hafd to please. The market for porkers oponed very firm, and hold throughout the sale. AH classes met with good competition, and prices were in advance of lato rates. Tho bacon market opened considerably easier and showed a drop in our opinion of 10s to 15s per head on light baconers, and XI a head on heavy baconers. Valnes wero:— Light porkers from 53s to 655. The bulk of tho entry represented springers, but very few of them are carrying any condition, or can lay any claim to be considered first or socond quality. The miscellaneous and ■ nondescript, back conditioned or badly constituted entries that came forward had no fritmds. but it is impossible to sell them anywhere else except in this particular department. There was a good attendance of buyers, but with tho exception of about 10 per cent, of the entry, the balance may be classed as nondescript. To quote as follows, on the quality of the entry that was penned:— Best second, third, and fourth culvers, £5 to £S. Medium do., £2 to £4 10s. Springing heifers, £3 to £6 10s. Old cows and backward springers, £1 10s to £2 10s. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN TOUR STOCK TO 11. MATSON and CO., ADDINGTON. STORE CATTLE REPORT. There was a very nondescript entry in this department. Again cows predominated, and undoubtedly a wonderful sale resulted. Keen competition was tho order of the day, many graziers being in attendance. Bulls sold at late potting rates, and on the day it would bo hard to give prices for anything with tho exception of cows, which aro as follows: One pen of four-year-old bullocks made £lO 10s. v Extra good cows, £4 to £5.
