The net proceeds will be divided between St. Saviour's Orphanage, Mt. Magdala Orphanage, and St. George's Hospital. The flag match, played yesterday by members of the Hagley Ladies' Golf Club for prizes given by Miss Overton, was won by Mrs Watts-Ryan in the silver medal division, and Miss Nicholson in the bronze medal division. ''Closing Day"' will be by the Ladies' Golf Club at the Hagley links on Friday. The local telephone exchange was the scene of a crowded gathering when the staff assembled to bid farewell to Miss B. H. Pettit, senior supervisor, on the eve of her' retirement. Mr J. McDermott, District Telegraph Engineer, presided, and on behalf of the exchange staffs presented a handsome cabin trunk, travelling rug, and clock, and made eulogistic references to the official services ofUhe retiring officer. Miss Pettit had, he said, by her unfailing courtesy and tact, made a host of friends officially, and it was with feelings of extreme regret that they bade her farewell. In responding, Miss Pettit paid a tribute to the loyalty and willing service of the staff at all times. She had to thank them very sincerely for the tangible expressions of appreciation and felt sure they would always remind her of the happy official circle of which she had been a member. "To WTiare," comfortably heated and gay with a glorious profusion of spring flowers, was a delightful rendezvous yesterday afternoon, when a cold wind and a drizzling rain made conditions out of doors dreary and uncomfortable. With the- object of doing honour to two of their friends, Mrs John Stevenson and Mrs T. W. Cane, who are leaving to-morrow for England, twelve ladies, acting as joint hostesses, gave a particularly charming farewell party, at which about one hundred and thirty guests were afforded a pleasant opportunity of saying good-bye to the guests of honour, who, on all sides, were assured of a hearty welcttae on their return to Christchurch. CARNIVAL DANCE. Successful beyond the most sanguine hopes of its organisers was Messrs Beath and Co. 's annual staff da nee held at Dixieland last night, when nearly three hundred and fifty guests spent a most enjoyable time dancing to the music of Bailey's Jazz Band. Snowballs, caps, and many carnival novelties introduced during the evening added to the prevailing gaiety of the occasion. The capable members of the committee were: Misses V. Babbage, I. Wormald. M.
