ENGINEER'S DEATH.
FALL INTO FLOODED RIVER. Bailey Ooustoo, civil engineer, of Dunedin, was proceeding to Hanmer yesterday with his wife for tho purpose of undergoing treatment at tho Hanmer Hospital. Ho was travelling in the Christehurch. to Hanmer bua, and when crossing the Ferry Bridge, six miles this side of Hanmer, he dropped out of the vehicle into the Waiau lUver, 120 feet below. Thd river is at present in hoaivy flood, and the body was seen floating down tlie stream. * Mr Rutherford and a party followed but failed to keep up with it. A search for tho body is now in progress.
Mr W. W. Charters, whoso golden wedding was celebrated yesterday, was presented by tho members and executive of tho Industrial Association of Canterbury with a wallet filled with, notes as a token of tho high esteem in which they hold him. The presentation was made by the president, Mr E. H. Marriner, who said that Mr Charters held the record, unique, ho thought, in tho Dominion, of having been connected with tho Association continuously for 45 years.
