WET WEATHER INCREASES REGISTRATIONS, One effect of the continued rainy weather recently experienced has been to increase the registrations of men out of work. The Labour Department's list for the week ended Monday shows a total of 85, as compared with 57 the previous week. At the City Council ofiiceß the registrations this week, up to noon yesterday, totalled 34 men with 99 dependents. The Labour Department's registrations comprised 43 labourers; 11 drivers (hor?e or motor); 4 clerks; 3 each butchers, salesmen, and storemen; 2 each bricklayers, farm hands, and wool-sorters; and 1 each architect, blacksmith, ooacJipaintcr, cook, engine-driver, engineer, hairdresser, linesman, motor mechanic, painter, porter, and slaughterman. Work in Hand. Tho built of the men omployod by the Citizens' Unemployment Committee are working on the river banks in the vicinity of the Bridge of Ilemembranec. Many tree stumps are being removed, the banks on the east side (Oxford terrace) are being chipped a.ud graded and made neat and trim. The lawn in front of the Y.M.C.A. is being dug up, as tho grass is badly worn in; places. This area is being resowii in grass and will 'bo fenced off temporarily to give the new grass a chance to grow* Rhododendron Bank Proposed. It is proposed to recommend to the Reserves Committee that some of the old willows on the eastern bank, between Hereford street and Cashel street, should be removed, as they are in a condition beyond remedy. It is also proposed that this section of the banks should be permanently fenced ofE and planted with rhododendrons .and azaleas, and thus_Jjecome one of the show sections of the river banks. Mr Edgar Stead's advice in respect of tbis suggestion is being sought.
