CYCLING.

THE BIG ROAD RACE. HANDICAPS ANNOUNCED. One hundred and eighty-three riders have entered lor Saturday's big road race from Tiniaru to Christchurch and five men have been placed on scratch. Reports give the following account of the state of the road:—

Timaru to Rangitafca bridge, good; three miles Maronan road, very muddy ; thence to Ashburton fair; Ashburton to Ohertsey, oot holes frequent ; Chertsey and Rakaia, bad holes and loose shingle; to Bankside. worse; to £>elwyn. fair; riders will probably have to use the railway bridge : to Rolleston. bad with soft clay ; Kolleston to Christ-church, good.

BROOKSIDE CLUB. The annual Derby road rare, under the auspices of* the Brooksido Cycling Club, was held over a course of twelve miles on Saturday evening. Nino competitors faced tho tape. Refreshments were provided for the riders at the conclusion of the race. Mr E. E. Winters, president of the club, presided, and presented the medals. He complimented the riders on the times put up, and stated that the object of the race was to find new riders in place of the old-timers who had been the "good old has boens." Mr R. Croy acted as timekeeper. Mr E. R. "Winters was starter, and Mr T. Ellis, secretary. Following were the Tesults: —- S. Ronntree, Rakaia.
