"Guilty "< pleaded a middle-aged married man (publication of whoso name m Blippressed) to a charge of having stolen a 2d newspaper, tho property of Schneidcman and Sons, Colombo street, that morning. -folice statements were to the effect that trie raari, who has a family and is a clerk employed at Lyttelton, had been caught stealing the paper from in front of Schneideman and Sons by a constable who had been ..placed there because complaints had been received .that the firm's morning papers had been nr.ssmg. Explaining why he had taken the paper, the man said he ffad only taken it "to have a glance at the news." It was tho first, paper he had taken; he did not know anything about other papers. For the sake ot his wife and family he asked that Ms name bo suppressed from the papers. "I'll extend to you all the leniency I can " said his Worship. Under the First Offenders' Probation Act he discharged the man without recording a conviction, and he directed that tho defendant's name bo not •uublished. v JUVEXILE COURT. An infant, whose parents are in indigent circumstances, was committed to the Christchurch Receiving Home, to bo brought up m tho Church of England faith
