HOUSING.

£IOO,OOO LOAN PROPOSED. A proposal to raise a loan of £IOO,OOO for housing purposes came before tho City Council last night. C'r. F. R. Cooke moved: "That the Council take tho necessary steps as provided for in Part 37 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, to raise a loan of £IOO,OOO for the purpose of making advances to workers to enable them to erect workers' dwellings.' Cr. Cooke said the Council had alrcadv applied to the Government for £SO 000, but the money was not forthcoming. There was a great need for additional housing in Christchurch. The Mavor, Mr J. K. Archer, said that an offer had been received from the Public Trust Department to lend the Council £50,000 on certain terms. It might be better to allow that letter to be considered by the Housing Committer. Cooke said his motion could be adopted and sent to the committee. lhe .Mayor said it would be better for the committee to consider the letter from the Public Trust. Cr. Cooke agreed to hold his motion over till the next meeting. He said there were manv houses in main streets that should be destroyed, and new houses built. . It was agreed that the Housing Committee should consider the letter front the Public Trust and report to the Council at the next meeting.
