When the express for Christchureh left Greymouth on Saturday there were ISO passengers, and this number was j increased to 300 by the time the train reached Otira. The number travelling j by the westward bound express was 297. Association Football. The twfk boys' teams which are to play matches in Christchureh, will leave , Greymouth by Tuesday's express, and return on Saturday. i Personal. Mr D. J. Evans and Mrs Evans leftHokitika on Saturday, en route for Auckland and Eotorua on holiday. Mr J. O'Brien, M.P., returned frcai Wellington yesterday. Mr. and Mrs J. A. Flesher, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs G. A. Perry, of llokitika, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Mr A. G. Jarman, seeretray of the Westland A. and P. Association, was a passenger for Christchureh by the express yesterday. Mr M. Sherlock, who represented the West Coast at the P. and T. Conference, returned from ellington on Saturday. Mr W. Gerraghty, of the Railway Department., Ohakune, is spending a holiday in Grevmouth. Messrs H. «T. Bigncll and TC. Milligan, who have been attending the racing carnival, returned on Saturday. Miss D. M. Hopkirk, of the Reefton High School staff, leaves for Wellington on Tuesday to attend the conference of the Educational Institute. Miss Hopkirk is to represent tho Buller branch of the society. Mr J. He'witson, of tho Public Works Department, Greymouth, is visiting West-port. Mrs J. M. Bunt, of Greymouth, is spending % holiday in Christchureh. Mr E. L. Ivchoe, of the Greymouth .Technical School staff, left on Saturday for Duncdin. Miss T. Aitken, who has resigned from tho staff of the Hokitika High School, was made the recipient of presentations from the staff and. pupils on Friday. Mr F.'L. Turlcy has been appointed secretary of tho Westport Typographical Union. i The Rev. T. Dent and Mrs Dent, of the Solomon Islands, left for .Christchureh on Saturday. Mr W. F. Hargreaves, of Christchureh, is relieving Mr M. Mirfm, accountant at the Bank of New South Wales, Greymouth, during tho latter's absence on holiday. Mr Edwin Brown, who has been engaged in gold dredging in South America, recently returned to Hokitika. Tho funeral of the late Master James Vallanec, of Rotonianu, tool' place on Saturday at Karoro Cemetery. There was a lengthy cortege, including many representatives of tho farming community. The Rev. T, N. Cuttle read tho burial, service. At the annual meeting of shareholders in the lioss Farmers' Lime Company a.resolution of sympathy .with Mr W.'Vallanec and family was carried. The death occurred at Westport of Mrs P. Swan, a recent arrival from England. The funeral of tho lato Mrs Jamieson, which was held yesterday afternoon at. Karoro Cemetery, v,-as attended by many Cobden residents. The Rev. Mr Collins read the burial service. Amercian Jleet. Otira is looking forward to the visit of tho officers and men from the American Fleet on Monday. The number who will make the trip will be 1300. Hokitika Borough Council. At the fortnightly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, a request from the Canterbury Automobile Association for better supervision of motor traffic was referred to the inspector. Tho Marine Department notified that the Council was liablo for payment of 23 per cubic yard for sand or gravel taken from the foreshore. It was decided to apply for exemption. The contract of Mr T. Staine's, at £SO per annum, for removal of oifal, was approved. . It was resolved that the chair Ai an of the various committes confer with the Westland County Council regarding a Westland Court at the Dunedin Exhibition. Magistrate's Court. At a sitting, of tho Magistrate's Court at Westport a local hotel proprietor was fined £45 and costs £l7 9s 6d for breaches of tho Land and Income-tax Act. j Mining Matters. Although the State mines were idle for three days last week, tho Blackball mine was working full time, and the prospects there qre good for the coming week. The auxiliary baling plant which is to be utilised in "the unwatering of the Wallsend mine, will be assembled next week.
