A CENOTAPH.
* : ERECTION IN SYDNEY. (FROM OUR OU'X COIiHESPONDEXT.) SYDNEY, August G. Vac Government lias approved of the election in Martin place, in the heart of the city, of a cenotaph, as a striking symbol of the State's war service and of the sacrifice of her eons and as an inspiration to those who will pass by it in the long- years to come, and has made only one stipulation if it is to bear the cost of its erection, that tho design must bo that of an Australian, and that the material and workmanship also must bo Australian. The next step will be to get the consent of the City Council to the ereciien of tho memorial, but there will, it is considered, bo no difficulty in this direction, especially as a deputation to tho Government on the subject had the personal backing of the Lord Mayor. Martin place is easily cue of tho busiest spots in the city, and when it is extended it will bo an even busier highway. Tho question which has been raised is as to whether the influence of a national memorial such as this can best be assured bv its erection where, i amidst tho disturbing effect of lioiso | and movement, countless thousands will see it daily, but whero it will be apt to lose its inspirational effect, or whether it would be more effectively placed in some park or other place of comparative quiet, where the calm contemplation of it, in a suitable setting, would evoke that inspiration which is, or ought to be, tho aim of such a symbol. Apparently, however, thoro is a determination, regardless of tho architectural mind which thinks otherwise, to erect it ia Martin place. I
