Indignation has been expressed by several citizens at the discourteous treatment of American sailors by a * few hoodlums on Thursday night. Vain Roads. The Prime Minister promised in the House of Representatives vesterda, that increased subsidies for road maintenance would be provided out of the Main Highways j Fund. Telephones. The Postmaster-General announces that Christchurch will have to wait a whole year for automatic telephones. Sport. The Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting was marred to some extent yesterday by the rain of the afternoon. The track, already heavy, resenibled a stockyard, and • the going was heavy. BRITISH AND FOREIGN. Security Pact. The results of tho Security Pact conversations iu London have been received with satisfaction in France. Maheno Held Up. ■ The Maheno was held up in Sydney yesterday owing to a difficulty arising out of the seamen's interpretation of the new agreement with tho owners. Chinese Unrest. Further riots have occurred at Shanghai, strikers looting food shops. Australian Budget. Additional items of interest from the Australian Budget have been cabled.
