OBITUARY.

MR JOHN SINCLAIR. SNIr John Sinclair, one of Canterbury's c<u*]y settlers, and a well-known man in the Cheviot district for many rears, died recently at liis home in Papanui road. Mr Sinclair was born at Olrig, Caithness, Scotland, in 1843, where ho received his education. He came to New Zealand in IS«3, arriving at Lyttelton by the ship Lancashire Witch. For some two years he worked at his trade as a carpenter in Christchurch, being employed for a time at the Provincial Council Chambers! In 1865 ho was engaged by the late Mr "YV. Gerard, then manager to the Hon. W. Robinson, Cheviot Hills, to go up to the station. He only stipulated to stay for a few months, but remained for forty-two years. In 1893, the Government having purchased the Cheviot Estate for closer settlement, Port RoKinson becamo a busv roadpfead. Mr Sinclair was put in charge of the landing wrvice, subsemientlv being appointed harbourmaster a position he held until 1907 ; frhea he retired and came to Christchurch. During his lone residence in Cheviot in the"earlier days lie had innumerable duties to perform: arcWect, builder, doctor, dentist, etc.. and no one who camo seeking his assistance was ever turned away. . In 1907. on leaving Port Robinson, Mr Sinclair was presented by the Cheviot Countv Council with an illuminated address in Appreciation of his services He is survived l>y his widow, two loflsVaud a daughter, Mrs A. M. Hyde, Pamett, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
