CROWN TENANTS' POSITION. (BP£CUL TO "THE KRESS.") •WELLINGTON, August 13. A report presented to the House of Representatives to-day on tho settlement of Crown lands indicates that steady progress has been made during the year by the farming community. Rents in arrear show a. considerable improvement on the position shown in last year's report. Crown tenants now on tho books or the Department number 35,842, occupying an area, of over 20,UUU,Uw acres. Over 9,750,000 acres of this total is represented by pastoral runs the great majority of which are held in the Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland districts.
