ARAPUNI CONTRACT.
1 ' w TUNNEL WORKERS' STRIKE. (PBESS ASSOCUTIOIT TELEGBAJI.) AUCKLAND, August 10. The men working on the tunnel at Arapuni came out oo strike on Friday morning. This work, which is onii of the most important being undertedsen at the moment, has for its object the diverting of the Waikato River, so that the foundations of a dam may be built. Tho work had been re-organised in a satisfactory manner in this section quite recently, floods having interrupted the operations, and the men, working in shifts of six and a-half hours, had been earning £2 8s each per shift.
It is stated that, following a sudden decrease in the output of spoil from the tunnel, negotiations were commenced and, though the men's received the proposals favourably, a strike was declared. So far no settlement has been made.
