BOROUGH COUNCILS.

RICCARTON. The Riccarton Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr H. S. S. Kyle), and Crs. A. F. Fisher, A. E. Steero, H. Gudsell, H. Manhire, H. W. Wise, T. il. Ford, J. F. Peters, and E. H. Rankin. The Mayor said it had been decided that if the Canterbury Saleyards Company channelled Alliance street and dedicated the road the Cour.cil -.vould maintain it.

A letter was received from, the Unemployment Committee as.dm? if the Council could assist by finding employment in roadmakijg. Cr. Wise suggested that all the br-dges in the borough should be painted by unemployed men. —The letter was referred to the Public Works and Finance Comm'.ttee,,

Tlte Works Committee recommended' that Princess street be scarified, ro.led and metalled.—The report was adopted. The Electricity Committee reported that several service connexions had been mads, and that poles had been erected in Brvndon street, Puriri street, Rimu street, Matai street, and Riccarton road. The Public Works Inspector had made another tour of the b>rough and expressed himself satisfied with the system. / It wns decided to contribute .€1(? 3s to the Oapfei'bury Progress League. A letter was received from the Town Clerk, Chrjstchurch, that, owing to the refusal of the Paparua and Halswell Cornty Councils to agree to the resolution, it was impossible to increase the fees under the joint heavy traffic by-law.

SUMNER. A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last nieht. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Niph&rsqn). and Crs. H. W. Harris, O. I. Dehham, B. J. Ager, A. Holden, A. H. Tutill, E.* A. Johnson, F. O. Cooper, and 0. M. RosVell. The Standing Committee's report was as follows:—Heberden jjyenue and the Esplanade have been repaired with scoria, and screenings have been spread on some of., the footpaths. Part of Duncan street ,is being levelled to allow of drain?gevbeing carried to Clark street. The main road through Redcliffs and the top portion of Lyttelton Hill road is being repaired. There have been bad slips on Clifton terrace, the. Taylor's Mistake road, and the Lyttelton road. The former has been removed, and the other sjips will be removed as Boon as possible. Satisfactory progress has been made with the construction of man-holes on the line of the effluent pipe on the Esplanade, . considering the wet weather- and..the very high tides. Seven of these have been finished. There have also been obstructions in the sewers in Dryden, Nayland,' Berry, and Head streets. The fence round gt. Leonard's square is in course of construction, and will soon be completed. It is proposed to commence the preparation of the ground for sowing with grass at once. The affluent pipe from the r Clifton sewage tank is almost finished. Thiß has been delayed owing to the quantity of bard rock in the excavations. The question of a drain in Heberden avenue has been left to the "iCaypr, the Town Clerk, and, the foreman. ►. It is recommended that a farther payment of .£l2O be made to Messrs Edmunds Bros., Ltd., on account of the Clifton sewage tank, subject to the foreman's report being favourable. It is recommended that Mr R. Crowley's application f<"" a hut S'te at Boulder Bay be granted. The report was adopted. A letter from the Prime Minister regarding work on the Lyttelton road was received as follows :*tt" In reference to correspondence regarding the position of unemployment in arid around Ohristchurcli. The Resident Engineer has been instructed to proceed with 'he worjt." Correspondence from the Invercargill Borpugh Council was received regarding regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act. Mr W. Jones's offer of twelve plane trees for St. square was accepted with thanks. Mr 11.- Hobday asked for permission to plant trfM in the Scarborough Reserve, which was granted. jftT S.
