ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. The Canterbury . Centre oi the New Zealand Athletic Association met last evening. Present: Messrs Charles MeCully (chairman), W. Flewellyn, C. 11. Taylor, C. S. Forrester, K. J. Blakeway, A. L. Lewis, C. Yates, F, W. Large, L. K. Palmer, and 11. W. Beattie.

The executive reported that it had sent the following reply to a letter from the parent body: (a) The Centre should have power to grant and administer all permits in the first place, lor meetings of unaffiliated clubs, mixed clubs, and proprietary bodies; (b) in the case of proprietary bodies, however, permits should be granted only by the Centre in full meeting, and subject to the approval of the Council. Immediately upon the Centre's decision, a full report should be sent to the Council, which may then take such action as it thinks fit.

The action of the executive was endorsed. The secretary of the Otago Centre wrote that tlic New Zealand cross-country championship would take place on Saturday next. A sports gathering would be held for the benefit of the visitinp American Fleet, and two events for harriers were being put on a race of one lnp of the trotting course (five furlongs) for juniors under 18 years, and a two miles on the course for others. Entry would be free, and should any of the visiting cross-country teams or followers desire to enter, such would be very acceptable. The socretarv reported that the following Canterbury athletes had entered for the crosscountry championship:—J. Ij. Allen, G. Austin, and T. McLorimau. The Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club wrote that Mr G. Garrett had been elected hnndieapper for the cuming cycling season. The New Zealand Council wrote asking the Centre to guarantee the sum of £IOO towards the cost of bringing an American team, supplemented by two leading Australian cycli3ts, to the Dominion in the 1920--6 It was decided to wait on the English Park Sports Association and ask for terms for a Fridav ana Saturday night to meet the Amuricjns. Messrs Flewellyn, Cross, i Beattie, and MeCully were appointed a coinj/mittee, with power to net.
