FOOTBALL.

COUNTRY OUTCLASSED. SPEEDY CITY BACKS. City fielded a splendid team of backs in the annual fixture at Lancaster Park yesterday between Town and Country and these were responsible for Country's defeat by 39 points to 9. The Country forwards played well but the speed and tricks of the Town backs were too much for them. Robilliard, especially, was in great form and scored two splendid tries. Nor could Country look after Elvy on the other wing. Dalley played his usual sterling game, while MacGregor at second fiveeighths showed up especially in defence Hay, Oliver, and Nixon, the last-named taking Harris's place at full-back, all fitted well into a good combination. C. Barnes and J. Robilliard shone out at times in the Country rear division, while Maxwell was also prominent. Masters, Scrimshaw, and Burrows showed to advantage in the City pack, while Clark and Montgomery were always in the picture. The Country pack was much heavier, and pushed the city vanguard in the scrums. Dennchy was always prominent, while the two Waghorns, MeCormack, and Miller were noticeable ir a pack that toiled hard from whistle to whistle. . - The teams lined out as under:— TOWN. ' The Country forwards again came down, MacGrcgor saving well. Barneshad the crowd on their feet as he came down almost to the line, but was well tackled. The City backs tried'to open irp the game, but the Country forwards were on to them. At last MacGregor got away, and the bajl went out well up the . field. Play continued in the City twenty-five, but a passing rush by Dalley, Oliver, and felvy gained ground. From close play the ball passed through the hands of several. City forwards to Eobilliard, who outpaced the opposition and scored between the posts. Dalley goaled. Town 11, Country o. The City backs set up a great rush, but i Elvy was well tackled a yard front tho

line. A good passing bout among the White forwards saw Ironside away, but lie was well stopped. Elvy was away again a moment afterwards. Montgomery backed up, but the ball went out. McCormack broke away from a scrum but the Town forwards, headed by Clark, brought play back. Another City back attack by Hay, MacGregor, and RobiUiard saw the last-named over again near the corner for his second try. Nixon missed the kick. Town 14, Country 0. Trom a scrum on the touch-line, Dallcv sent the ball out, but the rush broke down. The ball was sent out to Llvy again, but he was grassed. Country broke awav with rage in the lead, but the Red defence was too good. An exchange of kicks followed. In ensuing tight play Kennedy was hurt, and temporarily retired. Dalley sent the ball out, but the pass went wide, and Masters dribbled the ball over tho lino tor a good try. He missed with the lack. Town 17, Country 0. Country attacked, but Nixon sent them back with a good kick. The White backs secured, but Barnes kicked too hard, and enabled Nixon to clear. From the.citv twenty-five Scrimshaw secured and sent to Hay, who kicked. Robilliard followed up and got the ball from Stewart. MacGregor then secured and sent on to Oliver, who went across between the posts. Dalley could not add the major joints. The half-time scores were: Town 20, Country 0. On resuming, Ford came on in place of Oliver, R. Tatterson replaced B. Waghorn, and Kennedy came back again. The country forwards made the pace hot. Miller was unsuccessful with a free kick. The Country backs set up a passing" rush, but the City backs intercepted. MacGregor Eont on to Hay, who in turn passed to Robilliard. He sent on to Scrimshaw, who went over between the posts. The ball came out and travelled to Robilliard, who raced from half-way" to beat three men and.seoro a brilliant try. Masters's kick went wide. Town 33, Country 0. The racing backs again came into action. Elvy raced away and was well tackled by Kennedy, but fell over the line. Nixon did not goal. Town 36, Country O. From loose play, White forwards came away, but off-side play held them up. Nixon got into the ruck and sent out to MacGregor. The rush broke down. Robilliard secured from the scrum and, after a good run, was collared. The Whito backs now began to liven up, but their movements lacked finish. Another rush saw Page secure and have an attempt at a pot. From a line-out Dalley sent on to Hay, who decided to kick. Robilliard got tho ball from tho ruck. He sent on to Ford, who gave it to Elvy, who scored an easy try. Turpin failed with the kick.

Town 39, Country 0. Clark started a rush, and Dalley carried it on. There were four red men, all who could have gone over if they could have secured. From a serum Dalley came away on. the blind side, but Hay gave a bad pass. The Country forwards carried play to City territory. They made one or two determined attempts, but could not get through. Kennedy retired hurt, and 0. Wright (carried on, Page going to half-back. The City backs secured and attempted to open up play, but tho Country forwards did not give them much chance. Boys' High School A defeated Boys' High School Bby 32 points to nil. Referee, Mr U. M. Bruce. St. Bede's (15) v. High School (5). The game which took place yesterday between St. Bede's College first fifteen and Boys' High School first fifteen has been looked to for some time. It was fast and bright throughout, and the final score of 15 points to 5 in favour of St. Bede's was a very fair indication of the relative merits of the two teams. , From the kick-off St. Bede's attacked strongly, and loose play brought the ball into the School twenty-five, where Spring secured possession. He made a determined run, and through faulty tackling by the School backs crossed tho line, and scored. Ho failed to convert. School now commenced to open up the play, and three or four line passing rushes kept St. Bede's on the defensive. Finally, a nice rush gave Merritt possession near the line, and he dashed over right at the corner. The kick was a very difficult one, but Merritt made no mistake St. Bede's again attacked, and towards the end o£ the spell the ball travelled out to Spring, on the right wing. This player, after a brilliant run, scored beneath the posts. The kick again failed. This reverse woke School up, and from then, until halftime they were attacking, but could not pierce tho defence. Play had been very even- throughout the spell, with little advantage to either side. , Plav aftor half-time was brighter, both sets 6f backs opening up tho game upon every opportunity. The Boys' High School pack were beating St. Bede's for the ball in the scrum, where they were somewhat heavier. The tackling on both sides was sufc, Bovs' High School showing considerable improvement in this respect. Merritt, centre three-quarter, was playing with great dash, and made several fine runs. He, however, should have let the ball out to his wings on one or two occasions. Calder, on the left wing was also playing well, his handling being very clean, whilst he kicked with good judgment. Tho first score in the second spell came about half-way through. A High School player was penalised for playing the ball when on the ground? The kick was in a handy position, and Mannix goaled. Doogan, first five-eighths, was playing brilliantly for St. Bede's, making some very good openings for his side. Receiving from Mannix, Doogan cut in nicely and secured a good try which was not converted. After this score the issue was never in doubt, St. Bede's having much the better of tho game. They were obtaining the ball from the scrums and their rearguard was throwing the ball about in fine Btyle. In the last minute, Mfcnnix let the ball out . to Doogan, who cut a man out and then passed to Ahearn. The latter dashed over the line and scored. The kick at goal failed, and the game ended: St. Bede's 15, School 5. Referee, Mr E. Empson. The Boys' High School tackling was not up to their usual standard. Crawshaw, first; five-eighth, was a notable exception in this respect. Doogan, first five-eighth for St. Bede's, was without doubt the hardest man on his side to mark, but Crawshaw never let up throughout the game. Carmichael, at fullback, did not give a good display showing too great a tendency to speculate. The School vanguard battled well throughout. Chambers, Smith, and Williams (wing), being the most prominent. Although School were superior amongst the forwards, the St. Bede's pack worked well, Bryco and O'Neill being the pick. For the greater part of tho game, St. Bede's were superior, especially in the later stages when their rearguard, amongst whom Doogan and Spring were the most prominent, completely dominated the game.
