THE CONDUCT OF HOTELS.

TO TDK EDITOH' OJT "IITE PBES'3."

Sir, —The Licensing Bench for some timo.has beori "busy, severely criticising the .conducting of certain hotels in Christchurch. A case was reported in last night's paper indicating that two young girls, 16 years of age, were collected in a, certain hotel in Christchurch drinking iii a'private room'with male companions. I wonder what liquor voters have to say to this? I wonder, Mr Editor, what you think of the general trend of events constantly coming before- the Magistrates' Court, say, eivcm within the : last , eight or■'- ten weeks.

Is it possible that the public.are so used to this trade that they hava become callous, indifferent, cynicaljtaking it. as a necessary blot on our civilisation. Surely these case:! coming hofore the Court, day in day out, week .in, week out, are a direct challenge to 'the Moderate League ar. to what they, intend doing. It is their self-imposed' job to clean up the liquor business. They are surprisingly energetic before the "election, and the .imitiated would perhaps I;& mado to holievo that they r:re the saviours of "iieir country. Rather aro they the saviours of their liquor dividends. The whole thing is a public scandal, that the marvel is that so many tolerate it. "While on this subject it might be said that girls of this description aro naturally better under control, but why not collect the men and put them under control too? Were the writer the father of one of these girls there would he some shooting going. It 6eems to be the only way to dra - v public attention to certain conditions existing in our Citv.—Yours, etc.. PARENT. '
