FAT SHEEP. The vardin? comprised, between eight and nine races.' Quality generally was good, there being some well-finished . drafts from the Ashburton County. The salo last week recorded a big jump, and' it was not expected that the extreme prices then established would be held. They scarcely were over the opening stages but as the sale wore on there was a decided firming, and on an average, values were practically up to a, week ago, though there was a slackening over the final race. A few outside butchers were cqmpfitiug, but practically the whole of tuo enlrv otherwise went to local tradesmen. Wethor mutton was making in the vicinity of 9d a lb, and ewe 7Jd. Top price for a pen of wethers was 555. Id. for the tops of a truck lot from Mr J. C. Irwin (Rakaia), and also fov 13 sold by Mr J. Campbell (Ealiug)-. The even quality of Mr Irwin's wethers was shown by the range—s3s 4d to 55s Id: a truck lot of 58 ewes sold on'account of Mr Guyon Macdonald (Orari) made from 47s 4d to 52s Id, top price for a pen of 11, 15 at 51s 7d, aud 15 at 50s lOd, Values were: — ■-•.•-.' The cow section was not nearly so Btrongly represented, though some exceptionally prime beasts were included in those forward. But for a draft of Xorth Island steers, aggregating 1.01 head, tho entry would have been very short, which supports forecasts some months ago thai when midwinter came along local supplies of wellfinished steers would be scarce. The .Xorth Islanders came from tho Wairarapa. They had a desperately rough trip, and though showing signs of it they presented a better appearance than might have been expected. Tho casualties amongst them were unusually heavy—about 15 per cent. Tho sale opened flrmly at last week's rates, particularly for good quality cows. Towards tho finish of the market there was a further strengthening, a race of cows selling at a marked advance, approximating 25s per head. Steer values were only moderately affected. There was considerable buying for West Coast butchers, that district apparently (experiencing one of its periodical shortages. Altogether it was a . particularly 'solid market. The average valncs were:—Extra prime beef to 45s per 1001b, prime 40s to 435, 'modium 36s 6d to i!9s 6d, light 32s to 355, and rough down to 255. Top price of the day was £2O 2s 6d for threo steers 6old by the Canterbury Seed Company. The 101 North Island steers averaged £lO 12s 6d. .
