HOSPITAL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The North Canterbury Hospital Board met yesterday. Present—Mr W. P. Spencer (deputy-chairman), Mesdames J.- MeCoinbs, H. F. Herbert, and Eva Roberts, the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), the Revs. F. Rule and Clyde Carr, and Messrs Cr. Armstrong, H. H. Holland, F. Horrell, W. E. Leadley, D. McMillan v F. G. Norton, H. Paterson, V. Rowell, and M. Bethell. . Hospital Committee. The Hospital Committee reported that since 1 the last meeting £3IOO 16s 5d had been received in fees from Christchurch and the smaller hospitals. The average daily number of patients in hospital during June was 338.5; With regard to the Kaikoura Hospital, a very gratifying report had been received from the Director-General of Health showing that sinco the alterations and exten- | sions had been completed there had been a marked improvement in the efficiency of the ] institution. A letter had been received from the Plunket Society asking that on the discharge of infants from the Hospital, the Plunket nurses should be advised, and given ftill particulars of the feeding that had been, given to tho child during the period in Hospital. The matter had been referred to the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital to take action in the line indicated. \ The committee had been giving consideration to the administration of the country hospitals, and now proposes that the Medical Superintendent of tho Hospital and the Lady Superintendent of nurses should, from time to time, visit these institutions for the purpose of making inspection and reporting to the Board. It was also proposed that all case notes and charts should be forwarded for perusal by the Medical Superintendent immediately on discharge of patients. The Medical Superintendent reported that there were 354 patients in, Hospital. Operations carried out under anaesthetics numbered 239. The pathologic department reported that examinations totalled 1348, Hospital cases 1000, outside cases 348, and post-mortems 9. The venereal diseases department reported that 170 male patients and 56 female had been treated. The physio-therapeutic department reported that 20 military patients and 2273 civilian patients had been dealt with. The radiographic department reported that 148 in-patients and 210 out-patients had been treated. Public Health Committee. The Public Health Committee reported that 67 cases of infectious diseases had been received during June, includin? scarlet fever 28, tuberculosis IR, and diphtheria 10. _ The number of patients dealt with in the infectious diseases hospital during June was 84. Dr. W. Aitken reported that seven new eases had been admitted to the Upper Sanatorium during the month and two deaths had occurred. On June 30th there were 72 patients in residence, and there were 16 empty beds. The Benevolent Committee reported that the new nurses' home at the Memorial Home was practically completed. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported that the Town Clerk (Christchurch) had written asking the Board to give a contribution, towards the American Fleet Entertainment Fund. The committee had no recommendation to make at present, there being some uncertainty as to whether the Board could legally make a grant of this character. The Minister had Approved the site for the proposed chapel at the Christchurch Hospital. The committee recommended that the Board should grant authority for the erection of a sufficient number of shelters at the Upper Sanatorium to allow the transfer of the male patients from the Middle Sana- j torium.
