EMPIRE DEVELOPMENT.
MR CHURCHILL ON CO-OPERATION. (BY CABLE—MESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT.) (AU3TBALIAX AXD N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) Received July 10th, 7.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 9. A group of members of the House of Commons who were either born in, or are associated with, the Dominions, tendered a luncheon to Mr Winston Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in recognition of the passage of the preference measures. Mr Newton Moore, presiding, emphasised that the building up of the Empire trade meant mutual safety.
Mr Churchill, replying, said that it must have a chilling effect if Parliament failed to endorse the unanimous decision of the Imperial Conference. It would entitle those in the Dominions to ask whv attend such a conference. Personally, he believed that there were great possibilities in the consolidation of mutual helpfulness within the Empire. He was confident, that irrespective of any protocol, pact, or paper arrangement, the people of the Empire would develof) a greater spirit of inter-dependence and co- operation and stand together in time of stress. He -was satisfied that their cooperation would be enlisted in a just cause. The gathering decided to form the nucleus of a group to watch events from the standpoint of Empire development. [The Budget gave increased preference to certain Empire products.].
