ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. The chief attraction on the sports programme to-day is the Hockey Association's senior and junior six-a-side tournaments to be held on the Domain. The second Tound of the Rugby SubUnion's senior competitions will close to-day, and an interesting match will be that between Celtic, and Old Boys, which is to be contested on the Show Grounds. The annual ball of the Hakatere Lodge No. 68, which was held iu the Tancred street Hall, proved a very successful function. There was an attendance of about 90 couples, and the hall was most effectively decorated with evergreens. The music was supplied by Mrs A. Mitchell's Orchestra. Extras were played fcy Misses M. Willeis, M. Maybury, M. Rooke, and Mr J. Childs. Messrs H. Blade and J. Turnbull were the M.C.'s.
In connexion with the acceleration of the Christehureh-Ashburton train service, a letter was received from the Railway Department by the Mid-Can-terbury Executive of" the Farmers' Union yesterday, stating (hat since forwarding the alterations in the time-table, it had been decided not to alter the departure time from Ashburton of the 3.30 p.m., train for Christchurch, advised as leaving at. 0.55 p.m. The timing of this train will be as follows: — Ashburton depart 3.50 p.m., Chcrtscy 4.35, Bakaia 4.57, Dunsandel 5.39, arriving Christchurch at 6.58 p.m. daily instead of 6.40 p.m. on Wednesdays and 6.58 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society was held yesterday afternoon. A Shakespearean reading was given bv Mrs Ruddock, who was cordially thanked for her contribution. Tho first of a series of concerts in aid of a bazaar to be held to raise funds for a new Roman Catholic- Church in Ashburton was held iu St. Stephen's Parish Hull ou Thursday evening. Tbero was a good attendance, and tho concert was of a. most enjoyable nature. The following gave items.—Misses McKendry, Goodwin, Bushell (2), A.Page, Bishop, E. Claridge, Mrs J. B. Culleu, Messrs M. I). Mosley, S.M., John Hunt, on charges of being found drunk and procuring liquor during the currency of a, prohibition order, was fined £lO, in default three mouths' imprisonment. Alice May Ma honey (Mr W. H. Woods) proceeded against her husband William Mahoney (Mr A. K. North) for failing to provide her with adequate maintenance. The information was dismissed. . Judgment for the plaintiff by default for the amount claimed, with costs, was entered in each of the following cases: —New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. v L Clinton, £3O 12s; C. L. Hansen v. W.' Cairncross, £4 10s. - J. Coutts proceeded against H. Bedham for the sum of £l6 10s, being damages sustained through defendant not safely using, keeping, and taking care of a motor-cycle lent to him by the plaintiff. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £B, exclusive of '£s paid into Court. For a breach of his prohibition order Joseph Shipley Roberts wa ß convicted! and ordered to bo detained at Roto Roa for twelve months.

and the inner row felled. The secretary stated that there was only £0 owing ou the piano and it is expected to have this amount cleared shortly. It .-was reported that the sewing classes were progressing very satisfactorily under the supervision of Mrs O. N. Totty. Green's road during the recent wet weather was under a sheet' of water The road was fornSrly on the rural mail route but it became impassable, and the mailman has been compelled to take an alternative road for the winter months. Now parts; of the road are freshly "shingled" with a foot of silt.
