Young People's Evening. 'The Town Hall was filled to overflowing on Thursday evening, when the young people of Sumner responded to the invitation of a number of lady residents to attend a social evening. The hall looked most attractive •with it;' autumn-coloured decorations and greenery, while the stage had been converted into :i cosy lounge. The evening was spent in ganys and dancing, the music for the latter being provided by Miss Ellis and Messrs C\ Bat tray and Burnett. During the evening the Tie v. J. F. Courser gave a short address to the young people, for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Several competitions were held, and a dainty supper w:is provided in the supper-room, and Mr Jacksou acted as a most efficient master of ceremonies. Amongst the ladies present were Mesdamrs A. W. Beaven. 11. .T. Marriner. J. M. B. Crawford. B. J. Agcr, W. 11. Nicholson, T. K. Whitfield. J. MeComf.s. I. Wilson, G. Cosset. If. Ogier. W. Wills, Gray. Yollcr. J. A. Booth. H. Heslop. Misses Jones, Ellis, Wood.Bain, Beese. Wilson, Andrews, and about 200 hoys and girls.

British and Foreign Bible Society. The Sumner Committee of the British and "Foreign Bible Society arc continuing their good work, and intend holding a, house-to-house canvass this mouth. Life-Saving. Buring the year the local Life-Saving Ciub has done very well in the matter of nwa-rds of the Society. Quite a number ha\*e gained proficiency certificates and bronze medallions, while threo members, Messrs- P. Climie, A. Bolam, and A Taylor, succeeded in winning the award of merit." Arrangements have been made for]'the presentation of awards at the club's annual dance Ladies' Rifle Club. There was a good attendance at the Sumner Ladies * Rifle 'Club this week, the shooting showing a marked improvement. Mrs G. Foster won the brooch for the 'week.

Volunteer Tire Brigade. Superintendent J. Carter presided over a full attendance of the Fire Brigade this week. Before commencing the business of the evening, the chairman referred to the death of Station-Omcer NobJe'tt, of the City Brigade.' and moved a resolution of sympathy with the relatives;, which was carried in silence, all members standing.' Bvanebman G. Bines, the delegate to tho recent Canterbury; Provincial Five Brigades' Association Conference, at Chr.istchureh, gave a very detailed account of the business transacted there, and was after--wurils accorded ;t very hearty voto of thanks. Redcliffs Croquet Club. ... ■ i Tins week, at the Redcliffs Arcade, the members of the Redcliffs. Croquet Club gave another popular five hundred evening, their gliosis iii eluding, a" number, or! Last Sunday the .members of the Young AV omen's Bible Class held a special meeting in celebration of tho 2.lst birthday of the Bible Class Union. Miss May Hampton, tho first leader of the class, was present, and gave an interesting account of the union, and its work. On Thursday afternoon the'mem-' bers of the P.AV.M.U. met at Mrs Sher- . rard's residence in Dryd.cn street. This, was the first, meeting of the year, and plans of work were discussed and .arranged. Solos were contributed by Mesdames Mason and Mogridge and Miss Young (St. David's, Auckland) gave a short address. Afternoon tea was dispensed, and a, vote of thanks' was accorded to Mrs Shcrrard for, her hospitality. Those present included MesdaDies McAra, Shcrrard, Mason, Mogridge, Baxter, Alexander, Gardiner, Jackson, Robertson, Cunningham, Smith, Slater, Hampton, Mitchell, Longuet, Misses Young, Cunningham, Bain. (2), Gerrard, Shcrrard, Hampton, and Dalziel. Redcliffs Presbyterian Church. To provide for Sunday school work at Redcliffs—which up till now has been carried on in a private house—a suitable building has been erected on Main Toad at the foot of Monck's Spur. This will be opened to-morrow at 2.30 p.m., when a service will bo conducted by Rev. AW -McAra. The Sunday sehool will be held regularly in the" future, and arrangements, have been made to hold a fortnightly service in the. afternoon.
