MEAT PRICES AT LONDON AND LIVERPOOL, RESPECTIVELY.
TO Tile SEITOS OF "'THE rBESS." Sir.—ln an account given by ilio New Zealand and Australian representative of the Port of London Authority of his recent trip round the world and extensively published in the Australian and New Zealand Press, it is slntcd that better prices can be- obtained in London than in anv other cntrc in Great Britain, this."contention being illustrated bv comparisons of price figures of sales in London, Liverpool, and Manchester, said to hnvo been published, by. the British Ministry of Agriculture. On investigation, it transpires that the Ministry of Agriculture does not obtain or publish the -wholesale prices of meat in Liverpool, and it appears that the London nrices have been compared with tho Ministry's figures for Manchester, as if the latter vrcre also applicable to Liverpool. That such an application is misleading is shown by reference to the market prices at London (Smithficld) and Liverpool (Gill street),. part-Vularly for Fiu-h commodities n.s An.stnli-m and Ncrr Zealand lamb, tho Liverpool prices for which are almost consistently higher than the "London. To corroborate my statement 1 enclose an analvsJq of the meal -prices at London and dining each we°k of the year 1924th" last comnleted'ealenclar year—which doubtless wi'l be of considerable interest to your rea-Tc-s etc., L. A. P. WARNER, Gentfrn! Manao-er Mersey Docks and
Liverpool, 3Vfav 2Gth. 19*25. [The enclosure is'a tr-.biilated list of imported mutton and lanib and beef prices at London and ai-Livernoo' for «ach week of 1f(24. For New Zealand mutton and lamb, the Liverpool prices are given as equal try or higher than the London prices, as often as not.— Ed. <: Thc Press/'" 1
