—_* .' • EXTENSION OF PO>VER STATION. - PROGRESS DURING JUNE.
The report of the works in hand in connexion with the extonsion of tho Lake Coloridge power station indicates that during Juno good progress -was made. The report is as follows: — . ' . Intake Works. —Caisson: During' the mouth the concrete linking of. the space between the inner and outer shells of intake cylinder was placed for a depth of il3ft, making 28ft complete to date. The cylinder was sunk for a depth of 6ft durins the month, the cutting ring now being Bft below the surface. Sinking has so far (been carried out bv means ot orange peel grali. Subaqueous tunnel: This,tunnel has now been excavated and walls and arch lined for a lengfli of 185 ft out of a total of 215 ft. .The progress mado by' the co-operative contract party for tho month was 25 lin. ft. of excavation, and 50 lin. ft. of concrete lining. Work will shortly be stopped at this face temoparily, and the party.will be engaged upon, the cross drive between the gate shaft and the existing tunnel. Tunnel. This is on account, of the four faces now working properly. It is. hoped to maintain or even improve upon this rc-ie of progress. At the intake end the contractors have adopted tho use of horses for hauling trucks, and in consequence.it is hoped to accelerate progress at this face. Tho water is not very serious yet, tho maximum flow being approximately 40 gallons per minute. At the-centre shaft the water being pumped has regained.fairly constant, varying between 000 and 1000 gallons per minute. Here" it length Of-bad ground necessitating close timbering was encountered during tho month. / . At.the. outlet end water has continued to show up in the floor of the tunnel, but asret no flow has developed. .A. 4in pump and main have been installed at this face. Surge Chamber'. —Tho concreting of walls of sur'"c chamber .was .continued during the month, 283 c. yds of concrete being placed. The concrete walls have now reached a .height of 22' ft from the floor of the structure: 00 I. ft of 7ft diameter pipes have been placed in pipe tunnels and concreted in position. Pipe Line. —No concrete work was done during the month, it being all completed in readiness for pipe line contractors.' Powerhouse Extension Contract. —During the month the cornice and parapet, and a portion of the generator • room roof beams and slab were placed: 140 c. yds of concrete were placed during the month, the contractor being engaged. erecting boxing for the majority of the period. Kscavation of Weir Basins and Tail Race. —The excavation of the weir basins is nowcomplete, all but the final trimming having been done by the dragline. The excavation of the tail race was also proceeded with during the month. The amount excavated by dragline during the month was 1000 c. yd.i. General. —Weather conditions were good until the end. of the month, when a fall of ISin of snow was encountered. A heavy warm rain (4Jin) caused high floods everywhere. Communication with rail bead was cut off for two days. Small slips occurred iu various places. The men employed at the end of the month were :i6 follows:"—Officers C, artisans 21, labourers 74, tunnel contract 110.; powerhouse contract. 13, cartage contract 6, shingle contract 11, total 250. -
