The popiilation. of the Auckland province to-day is practically equal to tne population of tho whole of N«w Zealand 'in 1878, stated Mr S. Invm Crookes in evidence at Auckland before the University Commission (relates the "Star")- He explained further that the ponulation of the city and suburbs alone was 30,000 in excess of the whole of the North Island in the same year In 1878 the ponulation of the iSoutn Island was 62 per cent, of the whole; whilst to-day the figures were reversed. Mr Crookes emphasised the important bearing of this evidence upon the establishment of an Engineering School m Auckland, and remarked that the demand for professional men, and particularly for professional engineers, bore some direct proportion to the population served.
