PERSONAL. (srrcuL to "ist psess.") GREYMOUTH, July 7. Sergeant 1). Hylaud and Mrs Hydatid were honoured by their friends at. Becfton on the eve of their departure for Christchurch. Mr J. B. Auld, county chairman, presided and presented Mrs Hyland with a ca3C of cutlery, and Sergeant Hyland with an inscribed gold watch. Mr F. J. Eaines, of the Eailway Traffic Office, Grcymouth, leaves shortly for Dunedin on transfer. He will be succeeded by Mr C. A. Legg. of the Christchurch office, who is at. present relieving Mr G. Smart at Greymouth. Mrs G. Dennistou, who has been staying with Mr and Mrs T. K. Y. Seddouj returned to Christchureh todav. The Hon. H. L. Michel. M.L.C., left this morning for Wellington. Messrs J. Eva.ll CGrcv County Council), and H. P. *olney (l.'i.nakaiki Farmers' Union left this morning for Wellington, where they will represent the bodies indi'-ated on a deputation to the Prime Minister with reference to the coastal road. . Mr H. MeClusky is an inmate of (he Ecefton Hospital. Sergeant H. Fryer was entertained to-night at a. social function organised by tho Greymouth members of Gic police force, in honour of his promotion to the charge of the police station. Senior-Ser-geant McCarthy presided, and made reference to the devotion to duty and other good qualities of the guest. On behalf of those present he handed Sergeant Frvcr a. case of pipes. Tho death occurred last night, .at Hokitika, of Mrs Jane McDonald Ingram, relict of the late Mr Thomas Ingram, formerly a well-known local hairdresser. Deceased, who was 84 years of age, leaves two married daughters and a son. Mr Potter, chief engineer for Edgar Allen and Co., is to. visit Westport next week in company with Mr Maitland, chairman of directors of the National Cement Company, and report, to his principals on the question of cement manufacture at Westport. Tunnelling Party. The West Coast members of the Lake Coleridge tunnelling party received advice yesterday that work was again possible", and they returned to Canterbury by to-day's express. Weddings. The marriage was solemnised this morning at St. Patrick's Church of Mr Bobert Fisher, third son of Mr and Mrs W. Fisher, of Runanga, to Miss Myrtle Edwina Nelson, of Biaketown. The Misses Nena and W.ilma Nelson were the bridesmaids, Mr C. Nelson best man, and Mr P. Fisher groomsman. After the ceremony a reception was held at Moore's tea rooms, and tho happy couple left later by the express en route for Wellington. Mr J. 8. Hickey, of Opunake, . was married at- St. Mary's Church, Hokitika, to Miss Birdie Coyle. The Bev. Dr. 'Kennedy performed tho ceremony. Mi3S Bita Coylo was the bridesmaid, and Mr P. Kane best man. After the ceremony a reception was held, at tho residence of the bride's parents, and tho happy couple left later for Botorua, where the honeymoon will he gpent. Mining Matters. ' As a. result of sinking operations by the Recfton Coal Co., the coal seam has been proved to be 22ft in thickness. This mine should thus take many years to work out. Tire. Shortly after 2 a.m. an alarm was sounded by the Central firebell. The outbreak was discovered in Harley's furniture factory in Herbert street, and tho brigade was on the scone in a very short period. Flames were found to be bursting through into the top storey in the vicinity of the stairway, but they were speedily extinguished _ and the damage was not great. The insurances arc £IOOO on the stock, £3oo oh the buildings, and £2OO on the plant, all the policies being with the Boyal Insurance Co. Inangahua Band. The annual report of the Inangahua Band referred to , the shortage of cornet players, and the loss sustained by the departure of- two prominent members. A good financial position was disclosed by the annual balanccrsheet. Mr Gate, a former member of the Woolston Band,, was welcomed by the president, Mr B. Wills. The election of officers- resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr F. Stallard; president, Mr It. W. Wills; bandmaster, Mr O. Potter; deputy. Mr Evans; sec-retary-treasurer, Mr D. Wade: conductor, Mr Elliston; sergeant, Mr.AV. Sara; custodian-librarian, Mr S. Corrin; drummajor, Mr T. Band. Farmers' Union. Mr W. Fisher presided at the monthly meeting of the Ngahere branch of the Farmers' Union. It was resolvjd to take no action with regard to the Grey County Council's balance-sheet. The secretary was instructed to ascertain from the Agricultural Department's field instructor, Mr Dalgleish, why South Westland was not, included in the itinerary of the travelling farm school. It was resolved, in conjunction with the' Grey Valley branch, to take over the Totara Flat saloyards, and members expressed their willingness to lake shares in the venture. Mr Carter, provincial delegate to the Dominion conference, was given a free hand in matters concerning the branch. County Council. Authority has been received.bv the Grey County Council for the expenditure of £l5O on the Inchbonnie'road, and of £4OO on the Dunganville road. Magistrate's Court. At a sitting of the Mncisirate's Court this morning, 'bcfor.i Mr" W. Meldrum, S.M., John Richard Bourke', who bad been arrested at. Kumsm. ' was charged with failing to maintain, his' wife. He was remandod to Dunedin. Hofcitika, School Committee. The Hokitika School Committee met last evening, tho Eev. J. F. Jack presiding. Tho chairman, welcomed the new rector, Mr K. Partridge, Tho Education Board advised that the resignation of Miss I. Aitkcn had been aecenled. It was resolved by five votes 'to three to support the »jbl 0 in Schools Bill.
