TRAMWAY MATTERS.
SPREYDON BURGESSES' MEETING. Replying to criticism levelled at the Cluistchurch Tramway Board, Mr D. Sykes, a member o" that body, gave an address at last night's meeting ol the Spreydon "Burgesses' Association. Mr. Sykes said that there had been a great criticism of the tramways for some years past. He did not object to criticism when it was fair and square and straight, but when the critic twisted and turned and made deliberate mis-statements ho had 110 time for itIt, had been said that the Hoard had been profiteering, and that they would be able to hand down to .posterity a free tramway system, together with a million pounds in cash. That was nonsense. The critics in this caso had made no allowances whatever for costs and maintenance. Mr Sykes quoted from a. written reply to criticism which had been handed to the newspapers previously. "What action is the Board going to take, if the bus competition increases?" asked Mr W. H. Winsor. "In putting up the fares, the Board is playing right into the hands of the buses." Mr Sykes: i can't give you tho views of other people, but I would let them run themselves off. Tho chairman, fiowever, says that he is going to run them off at all costs. Mr Winsor: And that's the way he goes about it! Mr Sykes was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
