' ■ . 1 ♦ The District Railway Traffic Office reports that traffic on the \V est Coast line has been particularly brisk during tho past month, the total amount or freight conveyed through the Utira tunnel for May was 33,472 tons, an increase of 8600 tons compared witn the previous month. At tho present time close on 14C0 tons day are being taken through the tunnel.

Cases of infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health districts for the week ended at noon yesterday totalled 33, .ns follows West Coast: Diphtheria, 3; puerperal iiepticffimia, 1. Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 10; diphtheria, 2; tuberculosis, 6; pneumonia, 1; puerperal septicsemia, 2; fulminant influenza, 1; infantile paralysis, 2: During the same period two deaths were reported, both being from tuberculosis.

Since the schools reopened this year the compulsory attendance regulations have not been enforced on account of the infantile paralysis epidemic. Yesterdav, however, a reversion was made to the usual regulations in this respect. and attendance at school on tho part of pupils is once more compulsory. "I know a man who bought a block of land in Blenheim, thinking he was going to make money out of it, but he now owes £BS rates on it," said Councillor E. S. Parker at the last meeting of the Blenheim Borough Council. "I may say," he continued, ''that the man is a working man earning 14s a day. so what chance has he of paying?"
