FIRED IN PANIC.
CHINESE GUNBOAT WOUNDS BRITISHERS.

PEKING, May 11
A report from Shanghai states that a house-boat' with three Britishers, Lawson. Hall, and Walker, and their wives and children aboard, was fired on when returning to tho harbour from a pleasure- trip. Just before nightfall, when the house-boat was Hearing a Chinese gunboat, tho latter suddenly, without warning, fired a fusillade.
Lawson and Hall were wounded in the thigh. Tho British Consul-Genoral entered a strong protest. Ho was informed that the shooting was tho outcomo of the crew of the gunboat becoming panic-stricken owing to a warning of nn impending attack, by an opposing faction.
Tho commander of tlio gunboat subsequently called on tho OousulGeneral, and apologised for tho shooting and announced his readiness to pay the hospital expenses of Lawson and Hall, and the cost of repairing tho house-boat. '
