SHIPBUILDING TRADE.

GERMANY'S BID FOR SUPREMACY. (FROM OUR OWH CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, March 19. According to tho "Daily Mail," the Deutsche Wcrft, Hamburg, tho German firm mentioned as having secured the £1,100,000 contract for six motor ships ordered by Messrs Furness, Withy and Co., is actually the Deutsche Werke, a, mysterious company by means of which tho Germans are hoping to make their country the centre of the world's shipbuilding industry. The Hamburg works are merely a repair works in which the Deutsche Wcxko have only a part interest. The British nhipa will bo built in • what were German Imperial shipyards and arsenals, which, unlike British shipyards and arsenals,' aro to-day tho busiest hives of industry in tho - whole country. The Deutsche Werke took over from the Imperial German Government Uie end of the war all its important shipyards and arsenals. These are at Kiel, Friedricheort, Spandau, Haselhorat,. Lippstadt, Cassel, Siegburg,. Erfurt, Amberg, lngolstadt, and Dacch&u.' It is understood that the basis of the deal was that the Deutsche Werke should make no capital expenditure, but should keep open the ex-Imporial shipyards and araenalfl and undertake the running costs.

Mass Production. The British ships will be made at the Kiel Werft of the Deutsche "Werko, or ■what was the Kaiseriiche AVerft, Kiel, the Imperial Naval Shipyard, where Germany built its war-fleet, Here they will be constructed oa a system of masa production. The parts will bo made in the arsenals and giant cranes will distribute them in the eix dry-docks. Every industry in the conntrv is represented in building ft ship.
