CANTERBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY.
10 is* xsrioa OT "THX pmsb.'' Sir, —I must thank you for yonr leader this morning dealing with the New Book Day at the Library. Ever since I commenced my library training iu London some twenty-five years ago. I have held the opinion that it is the function of the library and the librarian to get more people to read more and better books, and that the bbrarian must understand his reaoers, and must tell theui constantly about the books through a campaign of publicity, which is odo of the Sr ea *sf* economies a library can undertake. The scheme adopted la-t Thursday was so successful that we shall hold another book day in due course. The last was for fiction only, but I hops shortly to arrange a special day for non-fiction. You appear surprised to think that 400 people visited the library in the one day. As a matter of fact on Thursday last we issued 676 books, and these were taken out by some 420 subscribers. On the Thursday prior to Good Friday, the issue of books reached 14-95, these being taken out bv 900 subscribers. On Friday last, prior to Anzac Day, 1370 books were taken out and 840 subscribers paid us a visit. —Yours, etc., ERNEST J. BELL. Librarian April 27th, 1935.
